Some writers are killed in pursuit of their writing.
A memorial called 'Breathing':

 It makes fictioneering seem a doddle.

(Although someone did once write "Men shall be strangled by their own mythologies." -- but it probably wasn't meant literally.)

wasn't that from THE EGNISOMICON (1967)?
Can't find the exact quote on the internet but I did find this:

EDIT: The whole of 'The Visitor' (1974) from which that came is here:

It was quoted from memory, and could be slightly wrong -- but it's the final line of The Egnisomicon. We selected the final line by opening the book at random and dabbing a finger into it. This method brought up an unexpectedly apt line. I think that it was one of your lines, Des. (From The Nambee-Kra, perhaps? A guess, not having checked.)

Blimey! That's right, it's all coming back to me. The line picked at random from the whole EGNISOMICON to be its last line was:

"Men shall be taken over by their mythology."

I've found this out by managing to get my own ancient copy of the book from the eaves cupboard and checking!!

And what a memory you've got! It was from the NAMBEE-KRA (Part IV of 'The Egnisomicon'):
A poem that ends: "And here I lay my pen to rest."

Here is a new picture and article about BREATHING, a memorial effectively for writers who meet Death for real in their writing rather than simply writing about Death.

Still -- I didn't get the quote quite right. Maybe "Men shall be stranged by their own mythologies" was something I wrote after (and with reference to) The Egnisomicon. But, if so, where did I write it?

You were far from laying your pen to rest at the end of the Nambee-Kra. ;)
