The Tall Woman by Pedro Antonio de Alarcón
For many Spaniards, this is the best supernatural horror story ever written in Spanish. And, sometimes, we add that it is inferior to none. Are we blinded by patriotic fervour? Probably so. In any case, I think the story is worth a few minutes.

This is great horror story, Doctor Munoz. Thanks for recommending it! Any other Spanish horror stories worth reading?

Re: The Tall Woman by Pedro Antonio de Alarcón
I am glad you liked it, Slawek. I am still in debt with you, because it was you who introduced me to Grabinsky, one of the world masters of the supernatural story. Unlike Alarcón, who only clearly hit the jackpot once in terms of supernatural horror.
There are not many really good horror stories in Spanish in comparison to English or French. And fewer are translated. "The Princess and the Street Urchin" by Pérez Galdós, that starts in a Hans Christian Andersen- picaresque territory and ends in a land that it is Ligottian avant la lettre , it appears in a book called "Stories of Enchantment from XIX Century Spain" ( Bucknell University Press 2002) , but I do not find an online translation without payment before hand. I'll post any finding in this thread. |

As to Grabinski, I am glad he's captured your attention, Manuel!
I'll read the Pérez Galdós story as soon as I find some time. Sounds interesting - thanks for the tip. I see that the full text is online in Spanish so that's exactly what I'm looking for. A week ago I returned from Tenerife, where I went to a Spanish bookstore for the first time in 10 years! I then realized how much I miss books in Spanish. Alas, most of the literature I read these days is written in English. So, La Mujer Alta was just the type of story I was looking for upon my return! |

A very effective story, Dr. Munoz. Scary. Thanks.

Just fixed the broken link in the first post. Same translation, the one made by Rollo Ogden.

A nice, quick read. Reminded me of Aickman's "The Fetch" a little bit.

A fine tale of supernatural malice. It deserved to be well-anthologized.
