I really love Bathory's cover of Motorhead's "Ace of Spades". Really captures the melancholy and destruction that compliments that kind of lifestyle.

This brilliant vocal always conjures up (for me) the image of a 70 year old black sharecropper who had once studied opera in his youth before finding work doing Elvis demos.
The biggest names in showbiz had recorded this song with no great results. Proby said the problem was that the song was too pretty. "I reckoned I could take it down a peg or two." This cover is, I think, as definitive as Bobby Hatfield's covers of "Unchained Melody" and "Ebb Tide." As Tom Waits remarked, "No one has done a good version of that song since P. J. Proby. |
