Re: THE SECRET OF VENTRILOQUISM by Jon Padgett.

Another interview, this time with Gordon White of HELLNOTES.

This is a deep dive specifically into the inner-workings of my first short story, "20 Simple Steps to Ventriloquism," which took nearly two decades to get right.

Ligotti himself is featured prominently as part of the process, especially in the first section of the interview, as I couldn't have written what would become 20SS without his help.

Very enlightening read. Thanks, Jon.
So, who needs to contact Cadabra Records about a vinyl edition of 20SS?

There was a review on Black Gate recently but my device isn't getting on with the site right now so I can't link it.

Re: THE SECRET OF VENTRILOQUISM by Jon Padgett.

Last night I appeared on Lovecraft eZine's podcast. It also included writers/editors/publishers Mike Davis, Acep Hale, S.P. Miskowski, Joe Pulver, Derrick Hussey (who gave a major Hippocampus Press update), Philip Fracassi, Matthew Carpenter, and Peter Rawlik.

Reggie McRascal, my ventriloquist dummy, also made several appearances, and there was singing.

Otherwise, we talked for well over an hour about the genesis of my chief fears, my writing endeavors, Matt Cardin, TLO, and--of course--Tom and his work. I think it's well worth your while.

Re: THE SECRET OF VENTRILOQUISM by Jon Padgett.

LOCUS Magazine review by John Langan, author of The Fisherman:

"Since the publication of Songs of a Dead Dreamer in 1986 (and then its revised version in 1989), Thomas Ligotti’s impact on the horror field has been profound. Long before True Detective borrowed images and ideas from his work, Ligotti’s stories influenced a range of writers, including Poppy Z. Brite, Jeff VanderMeer, Michael Cisco, Matt Cardin, Simon Strantzas, and Richard Gavin. In an odd way, the effect of Ligotti’s fiction has been reminiscent of that Brian Eno ascribed to the Velvet Underground’s first album, namely, that while its sales may have been modest, everyone who bought it went on to make art influenced by it.

Jon Padgett’s debut collection, The Secret of Ventriloquism, is the latest entry in this genealogy. Padgett’s trope of choice is the ventriloquist’s dummy, a figure that brings together the puppets strung throughout Ligotti’s stories with the voice that speaks through Ligotti’s second collection, Grimscribe: His Life and Works. Padgett’s work is more than simple pastiche, however; rather, it articulates a concern with the source(s) of identity and action. Padgett differentiates between regular ventriloquists and what he calls Greater Ventriloquists, those who are able to use the ideas and implications of the art to pierce through to another layer of reality, which allows them to function in our world to fearsome and frightening ends.

Through several linked stories, Padgett constructs a kind of narrative tesseract, a complex of space and time that he turns first one way, then another, examining a number of figures, events, and locations from differing perspectives. In the process, he experiments with the means of telling a story, from letter to list of instructions to closet drama. It’s something of a surprise to realize that the collection is not particularly long, given the depth and richness of its contents.

The author biography to The Secret of Ventriloquism notes that Jon Padgett has himself been a practicing ventriloquist. Whether a Greater Ventriloquist or not, he has written a first book that speaks with a distinctive, unsettling voice."

Great that he gave a shout-out to Gavin and Cardin, too. There is a number of quality weird lit authors that deserve to be discovered by wider audience.
