Another great painting, Des.
I think this picture of a roomful of people watching a bird suffocate is possibly the greatest British painting ever. Joseph Wright of Derby hasn't been given his due because we like to think that British painting is primarily about a relationship to landscape, and he doesn't fit in with this. It's especially interesting because it shows our relationship with science hasn't changed a bit. We're still oscillating between horror and fascination. | |||||||||||
