Valerie and Her Week of Wonders

Valerie a týden divů is a classic 1970 Czech film based on a novel (1935) by Vitezlslav Nezval. The heroine seems to be living in a dream, seduced by vampires, priests, women and men who play a rather dark role on her way to adolescence. The sound of her earings is one of the most important elements of the film...Has anyone seen it?

All that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream..

Re: Valerie and Her Week of Wonders

I have the film on DVD -- and have watched it. I also own the soundtrack CD. Both the film and the soundtrack are deeply weird -- and give to horror a distinctly different slant (more fairy tale-like) from that of the films of the English speaking world.

Actually, it crossed my mind to mention this film in answering the interview question on the subject of cinema. Not sure why I didn't do so, except that I couldn't include everything.

You are absolutely right...Both the film and its music are pretty weird.Have you listened to the alternate soundtrack by "The Valerie Project"?

Re: Valerie and Her Week of Wonders

Just finished watching Valerie and Her Week of Wonders on Youtube, and I have to say I found it quite excellent. It was worth watching for the cinematography with its dreamlike and deeply beautiful images and the lovely music alone in my opinion. A must for fans of Gothic and surreal horror. By the way, has anyone read the novel by Vítězslav Nezval?
Check out the film here:

It's a good one. Wish the director made more like that.

Re: Valerie and Her Week of Wonders

I've only watched the first ten minutes, but I can already tell I'm going to love this. It's hard for me to find a movie I will actually sit through; my intuition tells me this is one of them.

"In a less scientific age, he would have been a devil-worshipper, a partaker in the abominations of the Black Mass; or would have given himself to the study and practice of sorcery. His was a religious soul that had failed to find good in the scheme of things; and lacking it, was impelled to make of evil itself an object of secret reverence."

~ Clark Ashton Smith, "The Devotee of Evil"

It's an amazing film. And great on a double bill with Lemora: A Child's Tale of the Supernatural.
