Last week I had to fly to Sydney because my father, who has advanced Parkinson's Disease, is now suffering from the onset of dementia and is unable to take care of himself or to handle his finances. Over the past few years a number of degenerate gold-digging women have taken advantage of him, and the situation is quite dreadful. As his only son, I had no choice but to evoke the power of attourney and take over his affairs. On the night before I left, I paced before my bookshelf, contemplating who should accompany me on my travels.

In times of crippling anxiety or during periods of illness I tend to favour a small group of reliable authors whom I consider to be my "sick writers." Amongst them are Mark Samuels, Bruno Schulz and of course our own Ligotti. On this occasion I chose to take three books by Crisp: two short story collections and his devastating novel of childhood. I am pleased to say that they helped greatly, and succeeded in keeping the unpleasantness around me at a manageable distance. When reading Crisp I often feel that the voice of his narrators is so consonant with my own inner dialogue that the British author must have travelled to Australia and purloined my diary.

All of which is to say I was delighted to receive The Little One: A Meditation as a gift. It is currently a sweltering thirty-eight degrees Celsius here in Oz, and coupled with my state of nervous agitation I feel close to collapse. The new books arrived just in time.

I'm sorry to hear about the issues with your father.

Could you please specifically name the Crisp titles you mention? I have most of his story collections; not sure if I have the novel.

Best,
Jeff

No problem, Jeff. The two short story collections I selected for my journey were Defeated Dogs and Rule Dementia! (the Snuggly Books reprint); and the novel, "Remember You're a One-Ball!"

Greetings. While we have not interacted here on TLO, your post regarding your father's health issues resonated strongly with me. I am sorry to hear about the challenges facing both of you.

I saw the slow deterioration of my mother's health and mental capacity as she struggled with Parkinson's and associated Lewy body dementia for several years, and I understand just how hard these things can be. I wish you well as you navigate these tumultuous waters.

I too understand the power of dark literature to provide odd comfort during these times. Perhaps the pessimism and fatalism of Ligotti and kindred writers helps us make sense of the suffering we see at these times. In an odd way that those of sunnier dispositions likely will never understand, it may indeed help us face down our own dark nemeses.

Again, I wish you well.

I feel I am in tune with that. Thanks.

I, too, am a fan of QSC’s work. I think I have read most of it and my reviews are linked from HERE.
If anyone knows of other published work by QSC, I would be grateful to hear.
All the best, Bleak.

Thanks for the "running list" of QSC reviews, Mr. Lewis. It appears that I have everything Crisp-related except for The Boy Who Played With Shadows and Erith. I recently ordered The Paris Notebooks, and his two volumes of poetry: September and October.

Sorry for turning a Samuels thread into a Crisp thread--but from what I understand, they are good friends.

What is the link, if any, between Der Prozess (Der Prozeß)--the German title of Kafka's The Trial--and Doctor Prozess?

Significant, I’d say. (Just realised that my story as entry in the Marked to Die tribute book extends later into a Trial!!)

Hmm, I missed that part of the gestalt in my review of the new collection, Thanks.

Re: THE PROZESS MANIFESTATIONS (new collection)

I’m not sure which Samuels thread to post this in (I don’t remember where discussion of Pilgrim Stranger was happening).

Mark has lowered the Amazon price substantially for A Pilgrim Strager upon its one year anniversary.

Of course I ordered it at full price just last week :-)
