Re: RIP-Avalon Brantley/New Zagava book from Avalon Brantley

“But the books!
Take one up, reverently, and bring it to the table, like a loved-one’s body, like a bride, one who just might still be alive.”

THE HOUSE OF SILENCE
I am past halfway in this novel. I already believe that this is the perfect form of THE HOUSE ON THE BORDERLAND ethos. Superbly so.

Having been following your real-time review of the book, I dearly wish I could have gotten hold of a copy of 'The House of Silence'. Sadly, there's no way I can justify spending what amounts to £50 on a single book.

Des, asking a "gestalt" reviewer this question seems almost foolishly redundant, but here goes anyway...

How important is it for one to have read House on the Borderland before diving into The House of Silence?

I have not read House on Borderland for many years, and I can only answer with that advantage or handicap. I found that the perfect situation to be in. But I suspect reading The Brantley does not need prior reading of the Hodgson so as to enjoy or understand it.

Thanks Des. However the Dirda story on the Washington Post is behind a paywall.

Do you have a different link perhaps?
