Re: Borges, Lovecraft: Shared Similarities

And for Durrenmatt readers a fine look at four entries as well as the translated text of Durrenmatt's The Hound.

The posting is a little confused. Part 2 is above Part 1 so be sure to read them in order for the best effect. This is one of Durrenmatt's rare supernatural short stories.

Re: Borges, Lovecraft: Shared Similarities

More Similarities between Borges and HPL [off the top of my head]

1. A type of anglophilia and a sense for English verse.
2. Appreciation for Poe.
3. Signature style that is almost instantly recognizable.
4. Borderline asexuality.
5. Brief and unconventional marriages.
6. Emotional and practical attachment to female relatives.
7. Generous in praising and promoting the work of their friends.
8. Wrote quite a bit of poetry but are mainly known for their prose work; are generally thought of as short story writers.
9. Erudition, classical education, cultural awareness but ignorance of or indifference toward current trends, contemporary sensibilities, and fashionable ideas.
10. Both lived a life of the spirit, largely bereft of the pleasures of the flesh.
11. Ever growing appreciation and influence of their work since their death.

Re: Borges, Lovecraft: Shared Similarities

I think we can add another similarity. Both writers admired physical courage. Borges with the Gaucho, and knife fights; Lovecraft in his letters, and his love for Rome, the stories of Bob Howard.
