Re: Mullholland Drive
Definitively one of my favorite David Lynch films, remember being mind-blown the first time I saw this. Having watched horror films for nearly 20 years now, I can say with confidence that the hobo scene is by far one of the most harrowing and disturbing scenes in film history. Even when you’ve seen the film many times, that scene is still pure nightmare fuel.

Yep!
Still one of his best. Some of those scenes will never leave my mind.

Re: Mullholland Drive
My favorite Lynch film and one of my all-time favorite horror films.
It's amazing to see how Mulholland Drive has shaped the new Twin Peaks: from having several cast members appear in both (Naomi Watts, Patrick Fischler, Robert Forster, Brent Briscoe, Scott Coffey) to having the nightmarish homeless person in Mulholland Drive transform in the Woodsmen in Twin Peaks.

Re: Mullholland Drive
I don't know if it is one of my favourite Lynch films, but it's still brilliant. I guess I find it distracting knowing this was originally filmed as a pilot for a new show, with the pat Lost Highway/Owl Creek finale being added later.
I would pick Eraserhead over it today, but I love all of Lynch's films – even Dune. |

Re: Mullholland Drive
For a while this would pop-up on cable with some frequency and no matter where it was in the film I would watch it out to the end...Sometimes just to see it again, sometimes because I just wanted to see the next scene because it was so cool and that kept happening until the end.
I feel like the story of MD, like a lot of Lynch, needs to be watched the same way you look at a 3-D op-art picture, you need to unfocus your eyes from anything specific and see the movie as a whole-- all at once-- then pieces will fit together (some not in the linear was they were presented), other pieces won't be clear even then. But it will be beautiful often and disturbing frequently and is a picture that will be hard to look away from no matter how it is being seen. I think it is on Netflix, I am probably going to watch it again tonight... (I should be able to see season 3 of Twin Peaks next week, I have been thirsting for new Lynch for a long while now.)

Re: Mullholland Drive
This was the first Lynch film I saw, in an old movie theater with my father, one with those old curtains, which was really fitting. I remember leaving with a huge smile on my face.
Aftewards we discussed the film over coffee and pie in a nearby bar.
Your fall should be like the fall of mountains. But I was before mountains. I was in the beginning, and shall be forever. The first and the last. The world come full circle. I am not the wheel. I am the hand that turns the wheel. I am Time, the Destroyer. I was the wind and the stars before this. Before planets. Before heaven and hell. And when all is done, I will be wind again, to blow this world as dust back into endless space. To me the coming and going of Man is as nothing.

Re: Mullholland Drive
I loved the original Twin Peaks but haven't watched the revival yet.
Loved Blue Velvet. Loved parts of Lost Highway--the phone conversation at the party, the Mercedes/T-Bird encounter-- but found the film on whole to be tedious. Lynch can be brilliant but is often self-indulgent and chaotic, just for the sake of chaos. Still, I would consider myself a fan. Sort of. Haven't seen MD. Was turned off when many of the 'reviewers' seemed more turned on by the Lesbian scene than anything else in the film. Talk about superficial 'critics'.

Still one of the most unnerving scenes ever put on film. "Spoilers" for MD, of course.
