I agree and wholeheartedly endorse Cabin in the Woods. It's positively Ligottian in other respects -- a seriously great satire that manages to transcend the things its obviously skewering and reach astounding depths, while also being pretty funny/entertaining. My mind was reeling for the last 30 minutes of the film and I left the theater feeling sick and intellectually exhausted. This only happened to me previously after emerging from theatrical showings of 2001: A Space Odyssey and A Serious Man, for what it's worth.

Also, here's an interview with the director that mentions the Lovecraft influence: http://www.avclub.com/articles/the-c...goddard,72362/

I was cheering and clapping and cackling with delight. They put the best bit of every good horror movie into one movie. there was the cenobite-esque guy, the twins from The Shining, the masked maniacs from Strangers, the pain-worshipping redneck zombies (kinda hills have eyes/wrong-turn-ish), regular zombies, clowns... I don't think that was a Great Old One at the end coming out of the mountain, as apparently giants were on the list of available monsters:

and scarecrow folk! scarecrow folk, clowns, humor... are we sure Tom wasn't sneaking around and helping to make this movie? That Quine org isn't fielding calls from "downstairs" and taking bets on which of their creations will do the sacrifice?

the one that gets me is towards the bottom left. Kevin. Kevin? My guess was murderous-child kevin, like in "we need to talk about kevin." I have also seen Kevin-from-Sin-City suggested, and Kevin McCallister from Home Alone (face it, that kid grows up to be the villain of the Saw movies).

I'm pretty sure Kevin is a reference to Kevin Williamson. His writing and directing are similar to Whedon's; both filmmakers emphasize meta-references and like to deconstruct their favorite genres. Williamson is also the screenwriter of all four Scream films, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Halloween H2O, etc.

Re: Non-explicitly Lovecraftian films

Just saw this last night and HOLY CHRIST!!!! This is THE MOST intelligent horror movie I've seen in years (maybe decades). I knew it was going to be good but I didn't know it was going to be great. Joss did an incredible job with this and it hits on every horror genre from Lovecraft to Ligotti. Personal favorite line "The lambs have gone to the killing floor; they have . . . wait a second, am I on speakerphone?"

Re: Non-explicitly Lovecraftian films

Jumping on the bandwagon. Just got back from seeing The Cabin In The Woods and am giving it a must-see recommendation. So much goodness in one movie... Smart and funny, if not overly scary. As for Kevin, I like to think it is just totally random and not tied to anything in particular. I know it is probably a wink or nod to something, but I find it hilarious to think it might just be some dude. "Oh that Kevin...!"

Re: Non-explicitly Lovecraftian films

it's no cabin in the woods, but Ghoulies has bit of Charles Dexter Ward and Rats in the Walls to it. Ghoulies (1985) - IMDb

Playback. it has a bit of Thing on the Doorstep to it, with an evil spirit looking for a new body.
