Re: Pessimistic Passage of the Day...

"First you dream, then you die."
-- a possible title for a story Cornell Woolrich was planning to write but never even begun, dying of a stroke on September 25, 1968. A note with these words was found in his pocket after his death.

"In my imagination, I have a small apartment in a small town where I live alone and gaze through a window at a wintry landscape." -- TL

Slawek, you helped us reach 100 pessimistic replies with the perfect quote.

Thanks to everyone else who has contributed to "Pessimistic Passage of the Day." I hope it keeps growing. I've come to rely upon my fellow neigh-sayers (see the first reply to this thread by gveranon for an amusing digression on my drunken spelllling).

A fine selection, paeng! I was planning on revisiting Camus in search of pessimistic passages myself, but haven't gotten to it yet.

"What does it mean to be alive except to court disaster and suffering at every moment?"

Tibet: Carnivals?
Ligotti: Ceremonies for initiating children into the cult of the sinister.
Tibet: Gas stations?
Ligotti: Nothing to say about gas stations as such, although I've always responded to the smell of gasoline as if it were a kind of perfume.

"I have absolutely no pleasure in the stimulants in which I sometimes so madly indulge. It has not been in the pursuit of pleasure that I have periled life and reputation and reason. It has been the desperate attempt to escape from torturing memories, from a sense of insupportable loneliness, and a dread of some strange impending doom."

Re: Pessimistic Passage of the Day...

Here are some fragments from Kafka's Diaries: 1920-1923:

"Only this everlasting waiting, eternal helplessness."

"The horror in the merely schematic."

"Utter despair, impossible to pull myself together; only when I have become satisfied with my sufferings can I stop."

"From Esther [a play by Franz Werfel]: God's masterpieces fart at one another in the bath."

"The old incapacity. Hardly ten days interrupted in my writing and already cast aside. Once again prodigious efforts stand before me. You have to dive down, as it were, and sink more rapidly than that which sinks in advance of you."

"Wrote a little today. Dog story. Just read the beginning. It is ugly and gives me a headache. In spite of all its truth it is wicked, pedantic, mechanical, a fish barely breathing on the sandbank."

"A great deal of unhappiness in the last entry. Going to pieces. To go to pieces so pointlessly and unnecessarily."

"Between the throat and chin would seem to be the most rewarding place to stab. Lift the chin and stick the knife into the tensed muscles. But this spot is probably rewarding only in one's imagination. You expect to see a magnificent gush of blood and a network of sinews and little bones like you find in the leg of a turkey roast."

"Insoluble problem: Am I broken? Am I in decline? Almost all the signs speak for it (coldness, apathy, state of my nerves, distractedness, incompetence on the job, headaches, insomnia); almost nothing but hope speaks against it." [Not even K., it seems, can escape from hope.]

"Forget everything. Open the windows. Clear the room. The wind blows through it. You see only its emptiness, you search in every corner and don't find yourself."

Here's one for TL: "The great days of the court jesters are probably gone never to return. Everything points in another direction, it cannot be denied. I at least have thoroughly delighted in that institution, even if it should now be lost to mankind."

"Is God a theatrical triumphal chariot that (granted the toil and despair of the stage-hands) is hauled onto the stage from afar by ropes." [Reminded me of A Soft Voice Whispers Nothing: "The vehicle to which these ropes were attach--by means of enormous hooks--rolled into the scene, its great wooden wheels audibly grinding the pavement of the street beneath them."]

"Once more I screamed at the top of my voice into the world. Then they shoved a gag into my mouth, tied my hands and feet, and blindfolded me. I was rolled back and forth a number of times, I was set upright and knocked down again, this too several times, they jerked at my legs so that I jumped with pain; they let me lie quietly for a moment, but then, taking me by surprise, stabbed deep into me with something sharp, here and there, at random."

A: No way out, then?
B: I've found none.
A: And you're the one who knows the neighbourhood best of all?
B: Yes.

Let's end on a cherry note: "19 March. Hysteria making me surprisingly and unaccountably happy."

Re: Pessimistic Passage of the Day...

Some quotes by Albert Caraco, translated by me (From a Spanish text).

"When humans realize that there is no remedy other than death, they shall bless their murderers"

"If there is a god, chaos and death figure as two of its attributes. If there isn't then nothing changes, since there is enough chaos and death until the end of time"

By Emil Cioran (Also translated by me from a Spanish text)

"As soon as one rises slightly above life, she takes revange by draggin us back to her level"

"With or without suffering, nothingness will devour us, indifferently and irremediably, for all eternity."

Anyway, people die...
-Current 93

I am simply an accident. Why take it all so seriously?
