Re: Re. Liminal Spaces and People in Weird Lit?

Thanks for the enjoyable posts from T.E. Grau and others... And thanks to Waffles for suggesting Gary, Indiana as the official liminal town of the United States! I was thinking of Toad Suck, Arkansas (where I have been briefly), but you convinced me otherwise.

Here is a further addition to the "Liminal People" category, bolded below:

LIMINAL PEOPLE
Gravediggers
Street Sweepers
Train Conductors
Lone Survivors of Shipwrecks
Homeless people
Unemployed people (in frantically job-and-work-centered societies like the U.S.)
Schizophrenics and others
The "town idiot" (or "town madman")
Shamans, priests, imams, etc.
Spirit mediums
Prisoners
Infants
Adolescents
The elderly
The terminally ill
"Outsider" artists, writers, musicians, etc.
Cadavers

Great new category! How about the Pineal Gland?

I agree with the empty store front as a liminal space. I always try to peer in and figure out what type of store it was. I had a creepy encounter years ago doing this. I was looking around this abandoned store front in downtown Akron. The store was completely gutted, but someone had placed a life-size clown dummy in the store. When I went downtown again I brought my phone so I could take a pic of it. It was gone. I couldn't detect any disturbance in the store. Dust was still on the floor.

And I nominate clowns as liminal people.

Didn't notice if migraine sufferers were included on the list of liminal people.

Re: Re. Liminal Spaces and People in Weird Lit?

I love this thread. There was a recent graphic novel, "The Last Broadcast" which was ostensibly about "Urban Explorers" but went into Lynchian territory fast. Made me think of that. Great idea Gnosticangel
