Call of Wenlock

Firstly, I should point out that I'm relatively indifferent to the Olympics...the idea of people in gruelling training regimes for four years to run round in circles or see who can throw a pointy stick or heavy ball the furthest seems like a form of insanity.

What does intrigue me are the Olympic mascots for the London 2012 games...Wenlock and Mandeville.

To me they look like something from a Lovecraftian nightmare and I think their designer is secretly trying to bring them back into the world under the guise of “mascots”.
When the time is right they will once again blot out the sun and make the seas boil with their rage.
These Cyclops horrors, watching over the frail race of man with their gaze of scorn. Supposedly they are happy, but how do we know? They have no mouths! One must assume they feed like an amoeba,
engulfing their food by the process of phagocytosis.

Being a frequent visitor to London, I have now started seeing statues of them in various parks and gardens around the city. Part of me wonders if after the sun sets there won’t be half naked crowds of people, with rudimentary designs hastily scrawled on their bodies, gathered around these elder gods, chanting and declaring eternal servitude and loyalty. Possibly sacrificing a hapless passer-by to appease the rabid fury of Mandeville...

I look forward to watching their development…kneel before Wenlock….

Re: Call of Wenlock

In that second picture, Wenlock is clearly about to grapple Big Ben into ruin with its tentacle. This is a symbolic attack on civilisation and on time itself, with which accomplished, Wenlock and Mandeville will no doubt proceed to teach mankind new ways to shout and kill and revel and enjoy ourselves, etc.

Absolutely candid, carefree, but straightforward speech becomes possible for the first time when one speaks of the highest." - Friedrich Schlegel

Re: Call of Wenlock

The waters of the Thames slowly bubble, and then part as the head of the abominable deity that has no earthly name begins to emerge from the murky depths...

Re: Call of Wenlock

Wenlock sounds like the name of an abandoned logging village in a poorly executed Laird Barron pastiche.

Re: Call of Wenlock

Thanks for the warning. Still another great reason to not see the Olympics in person. I'm so glad that I don't watch television and have missed all this B. S. so far.
