Re: H.P. Lovecraft and the Alt.Right

I'm greatly looking forward to reading Sandifer's Neoreaction a Basilisk, mentioned in that article. Looks like an excellent study of the origins of internet far right. Neoreaction a Basilisk by Philip Sandifer β€” Reviews, Discussion, Bookclubs, Lists

Re: H.P. Lovecraft and the Alt.Right

These intellectuals on the Left and even the Right have an agenda.
Too bad they lack the honesty to admit Lovecraft's views were hardly 'crank' but supported by the science of the time.(So much for experts). His views were simply a reflection of common mainstream views, hardly extreme. Jack London was typical of many people then; he recommended genocide for certain races but his list changed from day to day lol. The idea his views were an "anomaly" and unique to one man is risible. If Lovecraft were unique in this then America never was a racist country, right?

I do not disagree with Lovecraft's views being shared by many other men of his time, but the claim that they were supported by the sciences is, though commonly heard, dubious. How did the sciences establish ontological materialism? How, even if it be granted that some races differ in intelligence, does one draw from that the conclusion that x races should be treated in y way (say for instance wiped out)?

Thumbs up Re: H.P. Lovecraft and the Alt.Right

The science of the early 1900's believed in significant I.Q. differences among the races. Many believed some races had a stronger propensity for violence and criminality.

The only voice I mentioned in favor of genocide--though no one took him too seriously--was Jack London. I should have used a period instead of a semi-colon. I meant many people shared his low estimate of some races, not that they pushed for genocide.

It was a different time and a very different world.

Re: H.P. Lovecraft and the Alt.Right

You are quite correct. There was nothing extreme about Lovecraft's social views in America until maybe the 1950's, though probably even later than that.

We often forget how rapidly our science and our ethics have evolved over the last sixty years.

Towards the end of this same period, Cthulhu was also being adopted as an essential metaphor by the very non-mainstream Neo-Reactionary movement.
Really? I've never seen this.

Any love right wingers show for Lovecraft makes me terribly sad, but at least it makes some sense, especially in the light of his earlier views (he was a monarchist in the US for God's sake).

Pepe as a Lovecraftian deity, heh. Someone should write a story about this.

Re: H.P. Lovecraft and the Alt.Right

This makes the fact that so many of current day weird lit and Mythos authors come from the ranks of women and minorities, as well as the existence on subversive takes on Lovecraft like ones by Victor LaValle or Matt Ruff or Kij Johnson, all the more important.

Re: H.P. Lovecraft and the Alt.Right

Interesting look at race (but not necessarily just race) from the early 20th century. It seems to be the educated "we know what's better for you" crowd up to their old tricks.
