Stuart Gordon & Lovecraft at The Cinefamily

I tend to promote the independent LA theater The Cinefamily a lot on these forums, mainly because they show so many films that seem relevant to the interest of the TLO forumgoers (for example, here's their programming schedule from last Halloween). For TLOers in the LA area, there's going to be a marathon of sorts featuring Stuart Gordon's Lovecraft adaptations in 35 mm, with Gordon at each for a live Q & A.

The series starts tonight with a live panel called "From Lovecraft to Stagecraft" where Gordon (and the cast of Re-Animator: The Musical) will talk about the process of adapting the movie into musical theater, and will conclude with a screening of Re-Animator.

Then, the June installments of Cinefamily's Friday Night Frights screening series will feature Gordon's From Beyond on June 15th at midnight and Dagon on June 29th at midnight.

And on an off-topic and somewhat goofier note, Friday Night Frights will also be showing Deep Blue Sea on July 13th at midnight, with director Renny Harlin in attendance for a live Q & A.

Re: Stuart Gordon & Lovecraft at The Cinefamily

From Beyond and the Re-Animator films are goofy fun, but Dagon is unexpectedly good at riding a true Lovecraftian vibe for a large chunk of the movie. Worlds apart from the others, in my opinion. I would love to see it on a big screen, enjoy!

Thanks for the link, Corman.

On a similar note, my wife and I and a gaggle of friends and family have been enjoying cinema under the strange stars and silhouetted palms at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery since last summer, courtesy of Cinespia.

Give the link a peep to see if anything moves you. Music, film, food & wine amongst the whispering graves with thousands of our closest strangers. It's become one of our favorite weekend excursions.

I'm quite familiar with cemetery screenings (in fact I live relatively close to Hollywood Forever), but haven't been able to make one yet because it usually clashes with another fantastic live event happening in LA. Actually, John Wyatt, the man who for all intents and purposes is Cinespia, is one of Cinefamily's board members.

Cool. Good to know, and John Wyatt is a total mensch for his involvement with both fantastic entities.

Re: Stuart Gordon & Lovecraft at The Cinefamily

I recently watched the Masters of Horror episode, "The Black Cat" by Edgar A. Poe, and I have to admit it wasn't bad. Sure, the story was better, but I appreciated what Gordon was trying to do. CHG

Re: Stuart Gordon & Lovecraft at The Cinefamily

It appears the Dagon screening has disappeared from the schedule for now (probably a casualty of Re-Animator: The Musical's touring schedule), and the film on June 29th will be Arachnophobia.

Re: Stuart Gordon & Lovecraft at The Cinefamily

Checking in one more time to mention today is Cinefamily's 2nd Annual Fantastic Elastic 24-Hour Holiday Telethon, which is being livestreamed in its entirety. A universe of guest stars, including

Robert Downey Jr.! YACHT! Jason Schwartzman! Nick Offerman! Dan Harmon! Rob Schrab! Eric Wareheim! Udo Kier! Joe Dante and friends! Mark Mothersbaugh! Robert McKee! Neil Hamburger! Brett Gelman! Jon Daly! Space Ghost’s Zorak! Pete and Pete creators Chris Viscardi and Will McRobb! Pee-Wee’s Playhouse puppetmaster Wayne White! Cut Chemist! TV Carnage! Lil Bub! (and more!)

are helping the
reach its goal (they need a new projector and theater renovations). (And if you’re not in the LA area, $25 yields an ultra-rare DVD compilation of Cinefamily’s homemade Mondo Video Mixes).
