Re: Pessimistic Passage of the Day...

"His body and his soul appeared to have the strange ability to repel the hours, just as, inversely, a magnet attracts metal. Everything spun about him and fled; he was always the sole centre of an enormous circumference. He kept moving forwards, body and soul, in the hope of coming close to what fled at his approach. The same thing happened with time – his position remained constant in relation to the thing which, however hard he tried to clasp it to him, stole away from him and bounded into the distance. He was the one who had no incriminating papers in his drawers, who could show his diary to anyone. He was a creator. Perhaps that was why his life did not exist"
— Mário de Sá-Carneiro

“The real reason why so few men believe in God is that they have ceased to believe that even a God can love them.”
― Thomas Merton, No Man Is an Island

Re: Pessimistic Passage of the Day...

"I did not even want to discover truth anymore because I had guessed what it was. The truth was that life is meaningless.
The only thing that amazed me was how I had failed to realize this in the very beginning. All this had been common knowledge for so long. If not today, then tomorrow sickness and death will come (indeed, they were already approaching) to everyone, to me, and nothing will remain except the stench and the worms. My deeds, whatever they may be, will be forgotten sooner or later, and I myself will be no more. Why, then, do anything? How can anyone fail to see this and live? That's what is amazing! It is possible to live only as long as life intoxicates us; once we are sober we cannot help seeing that it is all a delusion, a stupid delusion! Nor is there anything funny or witty about it; it is only cruel and stupid."
- excerpt from Confession, Leo Tolstoy

Re: Pessimistic Passage of the Day...

Resistance at any cost is the most senseless act there is. -- Friedrich Durrenmatt.

This is (I feel) an objective and humane statement. The pessimistic element enters when you know the people who need to hear and understand it won't.

When I see a swimmer, I immediately think he'll drown, so I paint a drowned man.

Re: Pessimistic Passage of the Day...

Žižek:

"We really live in dangerous times. Great hopes, but deep ####, which is why sometimes I’m a pessimist. You see the Von Trier movie, “Melancholia”? After I saw it, I said, “Maybe, I would agree with the heroine, maybe this is a good thing.” It’s beautiful, it’s a little sentimental, but I always love the end of the world. Maybe we are a #### humanity."

I knew that someday I was gonna die / And I knew before I died Two things would happen to me / That number one I would regret my entire life / And number two I would want to live my life over again.
Hubert Selby Jr.

Re: Pessimistic Passage of the Day...

“People can't seem to get it through their heads that there is never any healing or closure. Ever. There is only a short pause before the next "horrifying" event. People forget there is such a thing as memory, and that when a wound "heals" it leaves a permanent scar that never goes away, but merely fades a little. What really ought to be said after one of these so-called tragedies is, "Let the scarring begin.”
― George Carlin, When Will Jesus Bring the Pork Chops?

"Life is but a doomed journey of misery and loneliness, punctuated by moments of suffering, and ending in total annihilation" - Zippy the Pinhead
