Re: Annihilation

Overall I personally prefer Inferno over Suspiria myself; if only it had a Goblin score instead of that bombastic proggy nonsense from Keith Emerson it could have been Argento's best film.

It's less polished than Suspiria and some parts fall flat, but it's often stunning. The soundtrack is mostly good apart from a few scenes where it removes atmosphere.

This literally could be a list of my favorite films.
For something a little more recent I'd say some of the better Japanese horror films come close, e.g. Pulse, Ring, Suicide Club, Noroi, etc. And The Grudge 1 & 2 aren't bad, either.

Also worth a look: The Abandoned (2006), The Shrine (2010), and YellowBrickRoad.

They may not be up there with the best, but they all feature uncanny imagery whose power isn't diminished by any attempt to explain it away.

Argento's, for sure. No link with Dante. And I mostly like the soundtrack, for the record.

In this case, taking it in as an album I'd probably find it a little hard to sit through, but I seem to recall it adding nicely to the weird schizoid atmosphere of the movie.

Re: Annihilation

While I'm at it, another title to recommend here:

The Objective (2008) - IMDb

Afghanistan-set horror/sci-fi in the spirit of The Blair Witch Project by one of the Blair Witch creators. A potential classic? Maybe not, but I still think it deserves more attention than it seems to have gotten.

I enjoyed this film though many viewers hated it. Perhaps in the spirit of Blair Witch, though without that nauseating "shaky handheld camera" issue.

The film leaves much unexplained and is definitely not for those looking for explanations, but may be appreciated by those who enjoy unreliable narration and wide-open desert spaces with a touch of cosmic horror.

The film is a must-see for those who are exploring the lore of jinns, or jinn-oriented traditional magic.

I think The Blair Witch Project is outstanding. The flood of lesser 'found footage' copies of it has only made it seem more impressive to me.

The Borderlands is a good one.

####. SORRY. I have to commit seppuku now.

(I'm watching the Annihilation movie tonight. Horror movies must be watched in the dark.)
