"The Dead Mountain of Life" - Michel Bernanos
Anyone ever read this? Only heard about today, and it sounds appealing (ie bleak as hell).

Re: "The Dead Mountain of Life" - Michel Bernanos
The reviews are very good ("A compelling spiritual nightmare"...yeah that's the stuff I live for). I'll grab it if I've the chance, though US cover doesn't look as nice as UK.

"Tell me how you want to die, and I'll tell you who you are. In other words, how do you fill out an empty life? With women, books, or worldly ambitions? No matter what you do, the starting point is boredom, and the end self-destruction. The emblem of our fate: the sky teeming with worms. Baudelaire taught me that life is the ecstasy of worms in the sun, and happiness the dance of worms."

The Other Side of the Mountain is a short but excellent read, very much a "spiritual nightmare." Surreal, nightmarish scenarios blended with despair amid encounters with a truly alien Other.

This novella is included in VanderMeer's THE WEIRD anthology.
Apparently it's a new translation. An overview with information and probably SPOILERS may be found here: Michel Bernanos: Sin, Destruction, and Forgiveness | Weird Fiction Review

VanderMeer has a soft spot for this novella. Apparently it was a big influence on his Southern Reach trilogy.

Seconded, thirded or whatever -- it's a great book.
Reminded me a bit of Jean Ray via Mount Analogue. Worth buying with the lurid Sphere cover, in my opinion.
