Re: Movie Recommendations

I recently had the pleasure of watching Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, and it is one of the better drama films I have seen in recent years. Laugh out loud moments of black humor mixed with gripping emotional moments of people struggling to find a sense of justice and companionship in a small town. Frances McDormand is amazing (as usual) in her portrayal of a mother who will stop at nothing to get justice for the murder of her teenage daughter. I can’t recommend this enough!

"Perhaps one suffers in the tomb. There are corpses that have strange grimaces on their faces when they’re disinterred, as if they remember down there all the filth of this life." - Jean Lorrain, The Soul-Drinker

Re: Movie Recommendations

Raising Cain - theatrical version and director's cut. Could have been much sharper but I think it's a lot of fun. The little boy with the weird voice is hilarious.

The Shape Of Water - I liked this but I thought they really overdid telling us how these characters are outsiders and Shannon saying out loud "you really are a god" at the end was too much.

Even though it's an unusual film in some ways, the general trajectory was too predictable and it needed a few more surprises.

Highlights were Sally Hawkins and the colours (it really was like a Jeunet film) and the pee jokes. Really want to know if Hawkins used a body double and crafty cgi.

Re: Movie Recommendations

I saw Black Panther yesterday. Pretty good for a superhero film.

Michael B. Jordan kills it.

Your fall should be like the fall of mountains. But I was before mountains. I was in the beginning, and shall be forever. The first and the last. The world come full circle. I am not the wheel. I am the hand that turns the wheel. I am Time, the Destroyer. I was the wind and the stars before this. Before planets. Before heaven and hell. And when all is done, I will be wind again, to blow this world as dust back into endless space. To me the coming and going of Man is as nothing.

Re: Movie Recommendations

I think The Shape of Water is a very good or perhaps excellent film and that in it the various crafts of filmmaking were executed in an exemplary manner.

I don't think it was a "great," film, or should have won Best Picture.

But the reason i'm writing this is to say that, at the end of the day, it was a R-rated Free Willy.

Re: Movie Recommendations

I really enjoyed Mute. It's a slow film that requires patience, but the final act was as tense for me as the ending of Children of Men. Paul Rudd and Justin Theroux are awesome - all the negative reviews I've read about their characters and performances seem to suffer cognitive dissonance over the fact that horrible people can still be charismatic. I can understand why Mute would be divisive, but it definitely doesn't deserve the trashing it's getting from press critics.

I liked the first half of The Shape of Water, but Michael Shannon's zero-dimensional character going full loon (I mean, why was he running across town in the rain to interrogate employees and Russian spies by himself?) really brought down the film for me. I don't really care about artistic priority disputes, but I find the plagiarism charges over the play and student film amusing because the film immediately had me thinking of Splash.

Woody Harrelson was devastating; his performance brought tears to my eyes.

Re: Movie Recommendations

Re: Get Out, the awards, etc...

I really enjoyed it—it was a great mix of dark humor and sci-fi social horror with highly relevant social commentary. That being said, I don't feel like I'm in a hurry to watch it again. There's a lot of movies out there with great social commentary, but I don't usually watch those movies.

I love horror, so that is the lense through which I viewed Get Out, and it didn't quite scratch that itch for me. Everyone called it the best horror film in forever, but really it's a sci-fi suspense film. And sometimes the humor took me out of what psychological horror is there. I don't think this is a failing on the director's part—just a matter of taste.

I thought It Comes at Night was the best horror release last year. One of the best films released last year, period. The cinematography, soundtrack, acting—everything, really—create such a damn oppressive and terrifying atmosphere.

“Is it more probable that nature should go out of her course or that a man should tell a lie? We have never seen, in our time, nature go out of her course. But we have good reason to believe that millions of lies have been told in the same time. It is therefore at least millions to one that the reporter of a miracle tells a lie.” – Thomas Paine

I find most super hyped mainstream horror films underwhelming (last year's King adaptation It left me feeling completely indifferent), but Get Out hooked me for multiple viewings. I'm glad Jordan Peele is involved with the upcoming Lovecraft Country show.

Re: Movie Recommendations

I'm glad we've some discussion about the Shape of Water. I thought it was great and beautiful, the different colors of green, the blend of the old into the new, the sounds of water...filming underwater must have been a pain. The various problems with the plot and the baddie didn't detract from the visual experience for me.

"Tell me how you want to die, and I'll tell you who you are. In other words, how do you fill out an empty life? With women, books, or worldly ambitions? No matter what you do, the starting point is boredom, and the end self-destruction. The emblem of our fate: the sky teeming with worms. Baudelaire taught me that life is the ecstasy of worms in the sun, and happiness the dance of worms."
