Re: Sarob Press

A new title is announced on Sarob's website: SAROBLOG - The SAROB PRESS News Blog: WAITING IN THE SHADOWS ~ NEW TITLE NEWS

To anyone familiar with Katherine Haynes' works, what is your opinion of them? I've never read her before, so any assessment would be most helpful.

To be honest, I know nothing of her either.
I have faith in Robert, though.

Waiting In The Shadows by Katherine Haynes

Wow.
Without any warning, this landed in my mailbox this afternoon.
Slim book, ten stories.
Goes to the top of my queue before temps grow to warm for me to enjoy these sorts of tales.

Waiting In The Shadows

There are ten stories in this collection.
Several had been published in Ghosts And Scholars and Supernatural Tales magazines. Others were from publications I was less familiar with.
All struck me as "haunted" stories, mischief in the shadows.
"Magicians And Moonlight," in particular, would have fit nicely in any fin de siècle compilation.
The prose is well crafted, without being excessively florid.
Readers of MR James will be on familiar territory.
Only 200 copies were printed.

Hope this helps, Nguyen.
I seldom do book reviews. When I do, I avoid revealing much, and I am extremely reluctant to recommend anything.
Personally, I own a large number of Sarob titles.
I really like this press and their overall style.
Good luck.

"Waiting In The Shadow" by Katherine Haynes

OK, I love this press but didn't know the author and was holding out. Now Zaharoff and In A Dark Light have convinced me.

Ordered!

Re: Sarob Press

Robert Morgan posted this at Sarob Press today:

And I’ve almost finished work on the next Sarob Press title (currently scheduled for early June) ... Revenants & Maledictions is a new collection of ten stories (six previously unpublished) from the ever wonderful Peter Bell with an absolutely fabulous wrap jacket painting by Paul Lowe. All being well, I hope to post full details in a week or so.

I am reluctant to recommend anything, period.
Books, movies, music, restaurants, cities, date candidates.
Probably stems from when I started toiling the record store aisles in the 1980s. When clients would ask for "the best" whatever. "So, what the best Beatle record?" or "What's better, this Milli Vanilli or these Guns N Roses guys?" and I'm thinking, Dude are you mental?
Yet I knew, people have different tastes. One person's crap was another's guilty sundae.
Writers favored at this forum are likely unknown or disdained elsewhere.
"The latest Damian Murphy is a haunting collection."
"Oh, be good as the new Edward Lee?"
Trust me, each scribe has his admirers.
I decided never to recommend a damn thing.
I may review a title - brief overview, couple of thoughts - but I rarely say you must buy this, so good. Awesome!!!!!
At the end of the day, after a certain age, people better know themselves. γνῶθι σεαυτόν
To quote Prince, "In this life, You're on your own."

@Zaharoff — I don't see that this ethic is mutually exclusive of writing reviews (and indeed your movie review thread is the proof of the pudding). There is, after all, a difference between recommendations and reviews...
