Topic Winner Weird Horror Magazines and Journals

What do you consider to be the best weird fiction magazines and journals currently publishing? I'm trying to make a "must-have" subscription list so I can know how much I need to spend/save up (I know, I'm poor). I got an unexpected ad-based payment for some non-fiction work yesterday and I want to put it to good use.

Re: Weird Horror Magazines and Journals

This is a great question Neal. I've been wondering the same thing so really glad you asked. Ellen Datlow's yearly "Best Horror" series usually has a suggestion list of magazines, webzines, journals, etc but haven't seen anything else even though I've been looking so hoping the collective wisdom of the Network will give some other recs.

Re: Weird Horror Magazines and Journals

If you like M R James, then Rosemary Pardoe's long-running (in various versions) M R James Ghosts & Scholars Newsletter is a must. It has been mostly essays, but has recently started publishing fiction again. For the classic ghost story, David Longhorn's Supernatural Tales is also well-established and has excellent contributors. There is a fairly new Anglo-French journal, The Black Herald, publishing cutting-edge dark fiction, poetry and essays (blackheraldpress.wordpress.com). I came to this via Le Visage Vert, the French journal of commentary on the fantastic and weird. And the journal I edit, Wormwood, has covered many authors in the field, both renowned and obscure. Like you, though, I'm interested to hear of any others.

Re: Weird Horror Magazines and Journals

An excellent question, I too like to keep my ear to the ground for any weird fiction magazines and journals.

Phantasmagorium (since October 2011 I believe) is one I can suggest:
Phantasmagorium

As Sand has also posted, I can recommend David Longhorn's Supernatural Tales.

Weird Fiction Review Weird Fiction Review | Your Non-Denominational Source for The Weird
also has some great tales on its site along with interviews and discussions.

To quote from the Weird Fiction Review site:
"WeirdFictionReview.com is an ongoing exploration into all facets of the weird, from the classics to the next generation of weird writers and international weird. Reviews, interviews, short essays, comics, and occasional fiction.
This site exists in a symbiotic relationship with S.T. Joshi’s print journal The Weird Fiction Review but does not share staff."

Would love to hear more suggestions and recommendations.

Re: Weird Horror Magazines and Journals

According to a February 23 post on their website, the latest incarnation of Weird Tales is re-launching with their new publisher, and apparently the newest issue is finished!

I've been a subscriber for a few years, and while it may be a little vanilla compared to some of the more esoteric journals, I enjoy it immensely and consider WT money well spent.

I really like the new cover, too:

Yeah, I already topped off my subscription for Weird Tales. I'm looking for more obscure stuff.
