Re: Movie Recommendations
I watched Skinamarink on Shudder (thank to you guys on TLO mentioning it) with light on and other people and I was still very creeped out. I had to skip some parts and looked away from the screen because I couldn't stand the full experience. I looked up other people's reactions and it was divisive with some saying it was horrible pretentious crap and others praising it as the best horror film. I think the reason is some people have a lower fear response or just forget they have a primal fear of the dark. Kind of like how humans have evolved to sense snakes and spiders because they fear them, so the same with darkness. The last 30 min was horrifying for me as a sense of doom grew and culminated with the face. I will probably have nightmare about this film in the future.

"Tell me how you want to die, and I'll tell you who you are. In other words, how do you fill out an empty life? With women, books, or worldly ambitions? No matter what you do, the starting point is boredom, and the end self-destruction. The emblem of our fate: the sky teeming with worms. Baudelaire taught me that life is the ecstasy of worms in the sun, and happiness the dance of worms."

Corazón (2018), directed by John Hillcoat. It requires log-in.

Your fall should be like the fall of mountains. But I was before mountains. I was in the beginning, and shall be forever. The first and the last. The world come full circle. I am not the wheel. I am the hand that turns the wheel. I am Time, the Destroyer. I was the wind and the stars before this. Before planets. Before heaven and hell. And when all is done, I will be wind again, to blow this world as dust back into endless space. To me the coming and going of Man is as nothing.

Re: Movie Recommendations
The Pledge is a good film, but the homonymous book on which it is based, is a masterpiece.
That said, the film is also impressive because of the stellar casting.

Re: Movie Recommendations
I knew it is based on a novella by Dürrenmatt, but I have not read it yet. Definitely on my list now.

Re: Movie Recommendations
The novel The Pledge was great. I saw the film at the theater. I felt it did justice to the book. What Nicholson's character did was effed up. Tom Noonan has always given me the creeps since Manhunter. Mickey Rourke had a powerful scene opposite Nicholson. They tried to dumb down Robin Wright's beauty. It was a little heavy-handed, but I guess it worked. She was stunning in State of Grace, and The Princess Bride, of course.
I still haven't seen the 1958 film It Happened in Broad Daylight. It got great reviews on IMDb. It's on YouTube. It may have been Druidic who introduced me the Durrenmatt. I know he introduced me to the novella Traps, which is one of my favorites. https://www.ligotti.net/showthread.p...dge+durrenmatt This is the copy that I owned:

Re: Movie Recommendations
I am undecided about watching the German film. From what I read, Dürrenmatt wrote the novel after the screenplay because he thought the movie's ending was unrealistic and more in line with traditional detective stories. I think I am going to stick with Sean Penn's version.
