Re: Still no "Mountains of Madness" movie
I would love to see David Cronenberg make a film about HPL's marriage.
Think of all of that body horror!

Re: Still no "Mountains of Madness" movie
That's why fluid exchange is usually guised as "love." If predatory, or manipulative, then action is more implied and offscreen. And women as congress initiators? In my opinion, manboys enjoy women as objects or victims. Placing a femme fatale in the expedition, stirring hormones and distracting their focus, could juice the narrative. Would HPL have done that? Balls. Would this be a departure from a purist version? Yes, sorry. I was trying to consider alternatives to explosions and shootings which would be de rigueur. Think if Michael Bay announced At The Mountains Of Madness would be his next production. By "censors" I don't necessarily mean the ratings board. I mean the Hollywood money, scared out of their dinky minds about onscreen sex. Ole Bay would probably suit the suits just fine. The more I think about it, the more I realize Hollywood could only bungle this project into an actioner. A Japanese production, however ...

Re: Still no "Mountains of Madness" movie
The only good thing about a Bay "At the Mountains of Maddness" would be an on set "accident" of Shia LaDouchee freezing to death while trying to be all "method."

Eh, we're really still joking about him? It's like we're back in '08.
Shia's career is ruined, and he wouldn't be allowed into any high end production anyway. Ain't no point in wishing him more harm.

Re: Still no "Mountains of Madness" movie
But why would there be a femme fatale? Having a native temptress in an HPL story is pretty dicey territory.

Not to mention, return to pulp tropes and unsavory exoticism.

Re: Still no "Mountains of Madness" movie
I personally do not think there are enough Lovecraft purists to justify a big budget, high concept film, rooted firmly in HPL.
What is the wad spending money on right now, May 2017? Fate Of The Furious - Boss Baby - Guardians Of The Galaxy 2 - Beauty And The Beast - Kong: Skull Island - Logan ... Blockbuster goers, these are what they flock to. Major studio execs will want Mountains Of Madness to be a blockbuster. Michael Bay directs, and making his celebrated acting debut as Dr William Dyer, Justin Bieber.

Re: Still no "Mountains of Madness" movie
The only Lovecraft film I ever really enjoyed was "The Haunted Palace."
That youthful enthusiasm is now long gone. But the reasons I loved it then were two. The first, the script was penned by Charles Beaumont, a favorite writer of mine. (I remember August Derleth telling me in a letter that Beaumont's original script was far superior to the finished product). Second, it incorporated a hint of "The Unnameable," again, a favorite of mine among Lovecraft's early tales of "cold grue." But back in the 60's it was just a blast to see Lovecraft's name on a film. And The Case of Charles Dexter Ward is still my choice for Lovecraft's best work.

I prefer House of Usher, Pit and the Pendulum, Masque of the Red Death and Tomb of Ligeia from the Corman/Poe cycle.
I enjoy the whole series, really. All enjoyabke, despite a certain repetition. |
