The H.P. Lovecraft Providence Statue Project
I got this in an e-mail update on the 2017 NecronomiCon.
------------------------- HPL STATUE UPDATE With a low-key indiegogo fundraising campaign ongoing, we’re gearing up for some major shifts in our funding strategy. We are working on securing more grants and sponsors, as well as contributions from private donors to minimize the overall goal amount, so that early this spring we’ll launch one big, public fundraising campaign via Kickstarter. Look for that in March. We’ll unveil it at a special fundraising gala, The Cabinet of Curiosities, at the Providence Athenaeum, Thursday, March 16. For more information about the project, view our statue project website. We can't say it enough - this statue is a gift to the city of Providence, the birthplace of weird, from the millions of fans of weird fiction from around the world, so its creation absolutely depends on help from you. To see the remarkable progress that Gage Prentiss has made on the statue so far, please check out his posts at the project’s facebook page. We hope you also enjoy this gorgeous poster, designed by our friend Dave Felton - just one of several special pieces of art created for this campaign. ------------------------------------ Statue - lovecraft Arts Sciences What are your thoughts on the statue? | |||||||||||

For once, H-Peel has a statue of him that actually looks good.

Ha, I donated some cash to this months ago... forget how much. Probably at least over $25.
To be fair, the bust of Lovecraft at the Athenaeum in Providence is quite a nice likeness as well. |

Re: The H.P. Lovecraft Providence Statue Project
I do like the statue design, and I am in favor of HPL having a prominent statue in Providence. With the possible exception of Kafka and Prague, I can't think of another author so linked to a city as Lovecraft to Providence. He is a significant author who has a legion of devoted admirers the world over. It certainly won't hurt tourism. I am just surprised that it hasn't generated more controversy given the current social climate of liberal intolerance. (The World Fantasy Award statue comes to mind.) At least two Confederate statues in the South were dismantled last year and are going to be stored until a "suitable" place can be found where they can be displayed again. They'll rot in a warehouse somewhere.
