Anti-Pessimist as a political polemic...

"Ban all pessimists!"
-- Andrea Leadsom (potential future prime minister of UK) in a recent speech.
God save us all.

This echoes a storied Thatcher incident.

At a meeting of conservatives attended by Margaret Thatcher before she became Prime Minister, the great, reactionary historian Maurice Cowling made the mistake of recommending "rational pessimism." Mrs. Thatcher retorted, "We don't want pessimists in our party."

(In my opinion, Cowling was a fascinating and brilliant historian, well worth reading whether you agree with him or not, but his getting his ears pinned back by the Iron Lady strikes me as very funny.)

Re: Anti-Pessimist as a political polemic...

I have compared Andrea Leadsom to a puppet in previous posts elsewhere, a Thunderbird one, and perhaps a Ligottian one, too? And she is certainly a Ligottian anti-natalist's loathsome Leadsom nightmare... http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-36752865
where it is reported that she thinks she will be a better prime minister as a mother.
Leadsom is one of two women candidates from whom our next prime minister will be chosen by the Tory Party membership alone, the other one not being a mother.
Leadsom's favourite image is being able to see the 'sunny uplands' as a result of the Brexit vote. Only a few years ago she supported the UK staying in the EU, but now she is a rabid Brexiteer.

Re: Anti-Pessimist as a political polemic...

It's strange how many women politicians go for the "Mommy" angle, like Segolene Royal in her campaign against Sarkozy and Hillary in her Dorothy ad.

No surprise with the ban of pessimists. Positive psychology is very popular now.

"Tell me how you want to die, and I'll tell you who you are. In other words, how do you fill out an empty life? With women, books, or worldly ambitions? No matter what you do, the starting point is boredom, and the end self-destruction. The emblem of our fate: the sky teeming with worms. Baudelaire taught me that life is the ecstasy of worms in the sun, and happiness the dance of worms."

The mommy angle works. Many desire nothing more than to spend a lifetime suckling at the tit of the nanny state.

Including many corporations who possess more powerful lips and razor sharp teeth.

Another politician was elected by an aristocrat. Yeah. That's politics in Britain every single day.
