Re: Ghost Towns around the World/ Images of crumbling symbols of modernity

I’m glad you liked the Yardley factory, Candy! I wish I could take credit for such a dramatic photograph, but I can’t; I found it on the Flickr website, where it was posted by a user named “nicoatridge.” I lived in Jersey City until I was thirteen, and have vivid memories of all the abandoned buildings and industrial detritus . . . Structures like the Yardley factory were part of the landscape of my childhood. For several years now a process of “gentrification” has been underway in Jersey City because of its proximity to Manhattan. Boxy high-rise office buildings and fancy condos are edging out the ruins, particularly in the waterfront district. I’m glad I knew the place when it still had its battered, ramshackle beauty -- when it was home.

Out-of-season (disused) Amusement Arcade in Clacton-on-Sea from 3 angles:

Two simultaneous scenes around the above arcade:

Later Edit: What is this out at sea? It seems to have been there a while but never used to be there:

Re: Ghost Towns around the World/ Images of crumbling symbols of modernity

Kallithea district, Athens Greece

This place has a very sad story to tell. Back in the 1900 there was a poet named Periklis who was madly in love with a girl named Sophia. She was a painter and although she was in love with him too she played tricks on him. She was indifferent and she even rejected his marriage proposal. He was so sad and disappointed that he finally committed suicide. The girl was frustrated and full of guilt for his death. Unable to carry this heavy burden she sealed every door and window of the house and stayed in, till her last day. After her death many people claimed that they had seen her ghost at night, wandering in the rooms, speaking the name of her beloved..

All that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream..

Here are some of the pictures I made this summer at a trip around forgotten, degenerate little towns spread around south-west Poland (Sowie mountains):
