The Man Who Collected Machen and Other Stories

Just wondering if anyone has heard an update from Ex Occidente regarding when Samuels' The Man Who Collected Machen is scheduled to appear?

Re: The Man Who Collected Machen and Other Stories

I just had an update from Dan : "Mark's collection will be out *very* early in January 2010." Fingers crossed!

This is fine news indeed. I'll be lining up for a copy.

This book won't be out until at least March 2010, to coincide with the World Horror Convention in Brighton, England.

I'm still working on a couple of things to go into it (not listed in the current contents).

Re: The Man Who Collected Machen and Other Stories

Are Ex Occidente going to have a representative/seller at the World Horror Convention Mark? (I've allready got The Man Who Collected Machen on pre-order but it would nice to pick up some of the lesser titles without having to worry about the postage problems)

I don't think there'll be an official Ex Occ dealers table. I do know that Dan's planning to have a new Ron Weighell book out in time for WHC 2010 as well. It might be a case of piggy-backing with someone like Tartarus (but here I'm guessing): especially since Dan and I are good chums with Ray.

Sorry, when I say "piggy-backing" I mean dumping my books on Ray's pitch and running away. ;)

Ahhh, feel like acquiring me a copy of the lost Valentine?

Joking apart I shall be interested to see that Weighell collection - I only know of him dimmly from several articles on certain occult motifves in the stories of M.R. James written for G&S and a fantasticaly hard to find collection from Ghost Story Press.

I'm glad Ex Occidente is getting back onto track with its publication plans after all the setbacks it has suffered. Do you know if your collection is going to be in the "new" format like The Nightfarers and All Gods Angels?

You should check out some Ben Marcus books as he uses this idea a lot, particularly in Notable American Women and The Flame Alphabet (the use of language as a toxin in the latter is probably closest to the way it's used in the Markitty stories).

That would be a big help yeah...he definitely deserves one!

There aren't any direct homages, but certain elements from both of them appear in a few of the stories. Aliens, contaminated texts, architecture as living language and vice versa, etc. There are a few writers who pulled off stories VERY close to something Mark could have written - the Thana Niveau and John L. Probert stories feel like they could have appeared in Glyphotech and Other Macabre Processes. The limited edition companion chapbook Marked to Die II: Friends and Enemies of Modern Horror might contain something similar too (at present it contains, among other things, a story by Mark Samuels called "Hail Lovecraft!" that is like Lovecraft vs Nazis and also "The White Hands II: Caught White-Handed" my sequel to "The White Hands"). All I can reveal for now...
