Re: Modern Art

Some great drawings or songs are made in minutes. A great photograph in a moment. Dance or music improvised (of course the skills to do this can be honed over years).

Mostly, I don't trust anyone to hand everyone else the criteria, it's always going to seem too restrictive to some geniuses. It's not a big deal to me if some people like boring modern art, it's just that other approaches need their fair share of attention.

And also I try not to define art, I use the word "art" in a generic sense because the word has too much history and differences in time and whatever the word might mean in a different language. It's pointless to get too fussed over it.
Just create things for whatever purpose they are intended and don't try to make it fit into someone else's ideas. I think some conceptual art might be better received if they were called "visual thought experiments" or something like that.

Re: Modern Art

Life is absurd.
( I was trying to make this post blank (like the world's first blank story I published in 2002) but the system wouldn't let me.)

Re: Modern Art

I've been thinking about this. Something occurred to me, and, on a hunch, I looked up "matter" in my OED... I didn't find what I was looking for. I looked, instead, with the Online Etymology Dictionary... Aha!

http://etymonline.com/index.php?allo...&search=matter

Well, it's inconclusive, perhaps, but suggestive of the reasons why, though swayed to a significant degree, I still have my reservations about Coomaraswamy.

From Coomaraswamy's essay, to which I linked:

Quote
Our sentimental or aesthetic culture—sentimental, aesthetic and materialistic are virtually synonyms—prefers instinctive expression to the formal beauty of rational art.
From the etymology dictionary:

Quote
...from Latin materia "substance from which something is made," also "hard inner wood of a tree" (source also of Portuguese madeira "wood"), from mater "origin, source, mother"...
I've bolded the pertinent portions. (Hopefully the bold will work.)

If I get time later, I intend to argue first for, then against, Coomaraswamy's position.

“Specialists without spirit, sensualists without heart; this nullity imagines that it has attained a level of civilization never before achieved." - Max Weber
