Re: Clive Barker

Despite anticipating it, I haven't read anything from The Scarlet Gospels yet as I like to experience works all in one go, but comments in recent years have shown me that Barker's views regarding Pinhead differ from my own interpretations gathered from his original novella/film, and seem more simplistic than I'd always assumed.

A part of me does worry this will slightly demystify and overly codify his original work in the same way that the Hellraiser sequels did, but even if this is an irredeemable failure I'll still rate Barker well. He's not on the Ligotti or Campbell promontory of quality, but at his best he's still largely untouchable when it comes to modern horror.

Re: Clive Barker

I urge everyone on here who hasn't read The Books of Blood to do so. Volumes 1 to 6 contains roughly 30 stories, so there is almost something for everyone.

I have not read his latter novels, but his early novels and novellas I can recommend. The Damnation Game, Weaveworld, Cabal, The Great and Secret Show and Imajaca.

As a popular, mainstream author who is almost a household name like Stephen King, his imagination in unparalleled by his contemporaries, whose language is close to poetic.

Here is, I think, the best quote from the film Candyman, based off Clive Barker's short story 'The Forbidden'.

"Why do you want to live? If you would learn just a little from me, you would not beg to live. I am rumour. It is a blessed condition, believe me. To be whispered about at street corners. To live in other peoples dreams, but not to have to be. Do you understand"?

Re: Clive Barker

It's another example of the movie having to dilute the darker, more mysterious content of the original story but I do have strong affection for the Candyman film. Great score, too.

Re: Clive Barker

And, I may add, Clive Barker's paintings are extraordinary works of art. So much so, that they make me want to read the Abarat series, even though is is not my kind of literature.

Your fall should be like the fall of mountains. But I was before mountains. I was in the beginning, and shall be forever. The first and the last. The world come full circle. I am not the wheel. I am the hand that turns the wheel. I am Time, the Destroyer. I was the wind and the stars before this. Before planets. Before heaven and hell. And when all is done, I will be wind again, to blow this world as dust back into endless space. To me the coming and going of Man is as nothing.

Re: Clive Barker

Indeed, he is often unfairly lumped in with the Lumleys, Herberts or Koontzae (?) of the world, but Barker is in this for the art, and is unequivocally the real deal. He just happened to have been lucky enough to have popped up during the big 80s horror boom, rather than his mainstream success making him a sellout, or any less of an artist than the weird fiction writers whose success eluded them in life. Even at his most erotic or gory, the tales contained within the Books of Blood maintain a level of poetic beauty that contains no less integrity than the more restrained, 'quieter' blend of oblique less explicit horror I tend to prefer.

I just hope he finishes all his projects. I'd lost hope for the longest time, but he seems to have hit a second wave of productivity.

Re: Clive Barker

Clive Barker's new collection of short stories, Tonight, Again, will be published at the end of next month. It is available for preorder over at Subterranean Press, where it is described as a collection containing

There was a time when I was interested in literary erotica - Apollinaire, Embeirikos, Bataille, de Sade, etc. - but that interest has waned and furthermore, I wish Barker would write horror stories again. Then again I also wish I were a groundbreaking heavy metal vocalist or the owner of Dunsany Castle.

In any case, I thought some of you might appreciate the heads-up.

Re: Clive Barker

Thanks. I really wondered what was up with Barker ? I know he had health problems. But it seemed he focused on painting or was it a writer's block ?

Hope is a lack of information.
