That's pretty much how I felt about the story when I read it the first time. On second reading it worked better, because I was prepared for the disappointing ending. Kind of curious to read it for a third time and see what my reaction is then.

People will probably laugh at me, but my favorite work of Barker's is The Thief of Always. Galilee was also wonderful.

Come to think of it, Barker has always been one of my favorite writers.
