Re: H.R. Giger

There was one of these in Japan too, but it has since closed.

The Giger-Bar in Tokyo was actually created against my will. While I was in Tokyo, I was asked to make a wish, on stage, during a press conference. Spontaneously, I wished for a bar, which was then brought into being even more spontaneously!

For this bar, I had developed the concept of tables-for-two in open elevator cars in the manner of gliding elevators that would travel up and down the four-story establishment, perpetually in motion. I hadn't taken into consideration the Japanese fire marshals. I had already been driven to the brink of madness by the building codes requiring flexible structures to ensure that buildings withstand earthquake shocks. When they nixed the elevator idea and prescribed fixed cabins hanging like balconies with wire mesh on the atrium side, I threw in the towel. Only Conny de Fries and my former agent persevered. This bar, with its huge entrance area, inside which spiral stairs open to the atrium, came into being.

It seems the bar was tailor-made for the underworld, which is not what I had intended. A friend who visited the place about 5 years after it opened told me it had fallen into the hands of the Yakuza. He went on to report that he was alone in the bar until 11 o'clock, when it began to fill with the type of unsavory characters who might have installed a roulette table in the atrium. My friend chose to take his leave.

The bar no longer exists. Insiders know that a bar in Tokyo rarely survives more than five years!

H.R. Giger

Is there anyone on this site who doesn't like Giger, at least a little?

Re: H.R. Giger

I wanted to visit Giger's european Bar ... but I just haven't found anyone who would accompany me - obviously, all my friends find the idea scary. I blame it on the Alien sculptures ...

Re: H.R. Giger

Giger is among my favorite artists, his art has been an inspiration since my early teens. I was disgusted at how he was treated on Species. He spent a great deal of money designing a fascinating skeletal train for a very brief 8 second dream sequence showing the homeworld of the alien. The studio had the nerve to cut the scene entirely from the film. This would have been, if only momentarily, a classic scene of strangeness from a visionary artist, dropped into some ####ty b-horror film that by sheer accident had an amazing artist working on it. Yet they couldn't find the few seconds to include it, disgusting. A video of Giger working on this in the studio can be viewed here..

I will be donating something spectacular, in the future, to his museum for phantasmagoric art.

Re: H.R. Giger

I just saw this Giger vid yesterday.. . and according to the blog where I found it:

"It would appear that in 1984/85 H.R. Giger quietly recycled some of his iconic production artwork for Alejandro Jodorowsky's unrealised Dune adaptation. Not for use in another movie, but a Japanese ad campaign for Pioneer's ZONE home entertainment system."

Unflinching Eye blog : H.R. Giger

edit: i hope that works, i'm new to this site and can't figure how how to properly post video clips.

Has anyone ever played the game Dark Seed?
Yes, I played Dark Seed several years ago ( several years after its original release on the Amiga computer. In the mid to late 80s? I forget...), on the WinUAE emulator. It was fun at first but I became terminally stumped after a while. Then I read an online review and learned this game is crazy difficult ; it should be attempted to be solved without help only by geniuses or psychics.

But I wanted to see all the Giger art in the game, so I got ahold of a walkthru. Was worth the effort. Anyone who watches the YouTube video you posted can see there are several interesting Giger backgrounds scenes, although the resolution quality is not the best.

I doubt Giger did the computer graphics. Probably somewhere there are a number of Giger originals, done in his typcal lavish airbrush style, that computer artists copied to produce the images seen in the game. I've never seen them though. Anyone know where they can be found?
