Did DJ Spooky, DJ of "Songs Of A Dead Dreamer" plaguarize Thomas Ligotti and others?
DJ Spooky stole his personnel title, "the subliminal kid" from William S. Burroughs.
He stole the title of his first album of electronic music, "Songs of a Dead Dreamer," from Thomas Ligotti. Is his use of Time Out Of Joint, and Tears In Rain plagiarizing Philip K. Dick and Rutger Hauer? Much of his music is made from sonic samples of previously recorded copyrighted intellectual property that's been edited, and recontextualized. Is he a big meanie? Or is it acceptable that art can be referential to other art, or contain bits and pieces of other art in a postmodern society connected to a constant bombardment of information and hyperreality? Is the sampling that DJ Spooky uses to make music in the legal sense "plagiarism" in America? No. Plagiarism in art occurs when the core of the song is stolen and used by another person. Just little snippets of sound are used. A character in a piece of fiction quoting a philosophical work of non-fiction, is not plagiarism either. |

Um, you're a little late to the game, Professor. | |||||||||||
"Thomas Ligotti is a master of a different order, practically a different species. He probably couldn’t fake it if he tried, and he never tries. He writes like horror incarnate.”
—Terrence Rafferty, New York Times Book Review
