Shadows

Softly, softly the Shadows laugh.
But I can't hear them;
Or see them
Quiver and shake
With their merriment.

What source their Mirth?
O how they laugh!
Slithering from the light,
Hiding what they conceal
In plain sight.

In dusky cellars, in twilight attics,
Softly, softly they laugh.
The Shadows are eternal,
Forever banished from the light--
To bear such burdens
Would be an invitation to madness...

Softly, softly they laugh.
