Topic Nominated Original Quotes

Come up with an original quote, preferably pessimistic in nature. It can be your own or a different author's.

"Of all life on earth, the human species is the stupidest. It mistakes its existence alone for an argument that life is some kind of divine gift."

“Evolution cannot avoid bringing intelligent life ultimately to an awareness of one thing above all else and that one thing is futility.”
Cormac McCarthy, The Sunset Limited

Re: Original Quotes

"Your hope for Failure is as futile as any other hope. Unaware of its infiltration from the beginning, you topple in circle uselessly for a fate that has always awaited you."

"Tell me how you want to die, and I'll tell you who you are. In other words, how do you fill out an empty life? With women, books, or worldly ambitions? No matter what you do, the starting point is boredom, and the end self-destruction. The emblem of our fate: the sky teeming with worms. Baudelaire taught me that life is the ecstasy of worms in the sun, and happiness the dance of worms."
---Tears and Saints, E. M. Cioran

Re: Original Quotes

A few scattered quotations from an as yet unpublished novel of mine:

"Individually, every human being is as beautiful as a Botticelli portrait. Collectively, the human race is as horrifying as a Bosch hellscape."

“Why not just reject everything? Consider the vast amount of planets and galaxies out there… what if each and every one of them were free from the taint of sentient life? The universe as a symphony of non-existence, the music of the spheres ruined by one false note: our planet. Wouldn’t that make us a sort of cosmic teratoma, a planet-sized polyp despoiling the purity of an otherwise immaculate vacuum?"

"The Ancient Greeks were wrong when they classified Echidna the She-Viper as the progenitor of all horrors: human consciousness is the true Mother of Monsters."

“Human life is limited but I would like to live forever.”
-Yukio Mishima

Re: Original Quotes

Odd that you should post this, DarkView since I have a notebook filled with apocryphal quotes of great writers/historical personages. It was a sardonic hobby for me a ling time ago. This is an old one but one of my favorites:

I don't know if the glass is half-filled or half-empty, but I know the water is poisoned.

Re: Original Quotes

The point when one realizes that in the bloody epic of history, no matter how tyrannical rulers were, they could not have been but with the consent of the innocent, is the point when one realizes that civilization is not a pendulum, but a tightening noose.

"My memories are very confused. There is even much doubt as to where they begin; for at times I feel appalling vistas of years stretching behind me, while at other times it seems as if the present moment were an isolated point in a grey, formless infinity."-- H.P. Lovecraft

Re: Original Quotes

"The optimist would most likely argue, in some form or another, that the bad we see is something of a mystery, although we would see the bad as good if we could somehow view everything as a whole. Why can't we see the good as equally mysterious? Isn't it possible that the good is, appearances to the contrary, quite bad, assuming we could view everything from a great enough distance?"

"In a less scientific age, he would have been a devil-worshipper, a partaker in the abominations of the Black Mass; or would have given himself to the study and practice of sorcery. His was a religious soul that had failed to find good in the scheme of things; and lacking it, was impelled to make of evil itself an object of secret reverence."

~ Clark Ashton Smith, "The Devotee of Evil"
