Re: Movie Recommendations
I watched this last night. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Hadn't read too much about it beforehand but realised which book it was based on not far into it. If you enjoy subtle, enigmatic, contemporary noir don't miss this one.

Re: Movie Recommendations
I do realize that one dead cat is nothing compared to the actual suffering endured at the 731 facilities. But the mere fact the filmmakers thought it was a good idea to actually kill a cat for their movie makes my blood boil. But at least the autopsy footage was acquired, meaning they didn't actually have to murder a child just to get the footage... That said, to me the ultimate Unit 731 film to date is Philosophy of a Knife. The experiment recreations are shot in a very expressionist way (black and white, stark shadows, a lot of effort put into sound design) and it's mixed with a documentary approach which features an interview with a Russian doctor who was present at the trial of the few people they managed to catch and prosecute for war crimes. And it gets the point across without killing some poor kitten....

I've seen a lot of those extreme films; Behind the Sun, Salo, Philosophy of a Knife, A Serbian Film, etc etc etc.

Re: Movie Recommendations
Actually, if I had to pick one of those extreme films to recommend I'd go for the French film Martyrs.
Martyrs (2008) - IMDb It's not particularly religious, so don't go all acidic on me Mark S. |

Yes, Knife is pretty good but I prefer MOTS mostly because its made by Chinese who never really get their revenge for Japanese crimes, or at least any meaningful trial, crimes kinda remained unpunished in that case. That gives movie additional strength. I'm aware that Russians were included to in 731 experiments, but this is more between China and Japan. And about cat... I don't know really, I'm just no the person who cares about animals, especially when they are sacrificed for cinema, good or bad. Silly me.
