Re: Your favourite song at the moment..

Since the happiness at finding a gothy Doom cover of The Smith's has yet to diminish:

Re: Your favourite song at the moment..

The story behind this is that apparently no one at The Lawrence Welk Show in 1971 knew what the word toke meant. Oops.

Re: Your favourite song at the moment..

Maybe because I remember this as a sad song from my childhood (as sung by Peter, Paul and Mary), I contend that this really is about an abandoned toy dragon. If there is double entendre about pot-smoking in the lyrics, it would apply only to a few lines of the song. I believe the lyrics bear this out. I am prepared to argue about this.

Funnily enough, I also remember being deeply affected by this song. I'm not sure which version it was. Either Peter, Paul and Mary or Roger Whittaker.

Re: Your favourite song at the moment..

Somewhat off topic, but I was very enamoured of these books at that time:

The Roger Whittaker version:

I'm not! Or if I did, I would be on your side of the argument, gveranon, as I had the exact same experience as a kid. Now let's get back to Lawrence Welk. My nonna always had him on her TV when we visited her house when I was a kid. Fond memories.

Re: Your favourite song at the moment..

My maternal grandfather never missed watching The Lawrence Welk Show. His favorite song was "Rose Garden." To my amazement, the only Lawrence Welk Show performance of "Rose Garden" I can find was not done by Lynn Anderson but by another singer. But for "Rose Garden," it has to be Lynn Anderson, surely, so here is footage of her from other shows:

I also remember seeing this as a small child while I was visiting my grandparents. I was as taken with it as they were. More innocent times.
