Topic Winner The Best Live Album?

We could argue all day about the best live albums ever released by bands or individual artists. My top two nominees are Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs & Englishmen (featuring Leon Russell and Rita Coolidge!) and Johnny Winter And Live. What recorded live performances absolutely knock you down?

Re: The Best Live Album?

This is going to be difficult for me, as while I greatly enjoy live performance and recordings, live albums as a whole tend to be hit-or-miss for me. My personal favourites are probably John Coltrane's One Down, One Up, Swans Are Dead by Swans, and Clyma Est Mort by The Dead C.

Too many to name, but Pink Floyd's Ummagumma, The Who Live at Leeds, Joy Division's Still, 1349's Works of Fire - Forces of Hell Live Stockholm 2005, ...

I'm sure I'll think of something even better once I click Submit Reply.

Re: The Best Live Album?

Two live albums that have amazed me over the years are Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out! by The Rolling Stones and Live at Leeds by The Who. Excellent performances by two important bands at the the top their form!

Re: The Best Live Album?

gvaeranon already said it but I gotta second Miles in Tokyo. I will say (though a little off topic) that Trent Reznor wins the title of Best Live Show I Was Not Expecting To Be Awesome. Not the biggest NIN fail, but holy hell I was blown away.

Re: The Best Live Album?

Maybe a tad biased, but I'd go with Joy Division's Les Bains Douches, which is one of my prized vinyls.

Mingus at Antibes, too, since it was among the first jazz albums I really took to.

I second "Swans are dead" by Swans, what a great piece of work that one is.

Re: The Best Live Album?

I normally don't care for live albums, to be honest. I'd rather be at the actual show.

Anyhow, as usual, my musical taste will most likely clash with other members here. My favourite live albums as of late are Fields of the Nephilim's Ceromonies and Faun's Pagan Folk Festival.
