Thomas Ligotti's Top Eleven Sad Songs

Neddal Ayad has provided a list of Thomas Ligotti's top eleven sad songs:
Junkies, Thieves and Crazies Need Not Apply: Thomas Ligotti Knows Sad Songs

Perhaps this odd subject lurked to the surface during the outstanding interview of Tom conducted by Neddal, Literature Is Entertainment Or It Is Nothing. Neddal sent the link without further explanation, therefore one can only speculate - or perhaps ask him directly. I would do so now, only I have been waylaid by the grapes of sloth.

Re: Thomas Ligotti's Top Eleven Sad Songs

My saddest song has always been Lenoard Cohen's "The Stranger Song." This particular live performance, with its deadpan delivery, never fails to work its dreadful magic on the heart:

Re: Thomas Ligotti's Top Eleven Sad Songs

It seems that the original list was much longer and had been paired down, either by Neddal's personal affinity or through the whims of a random seed generator. Tom compiled this list from memory, although some of the artists names and song titles were checked on the Internet for accuracy. The songs are listed herein by artist name in lieu of preference or degree of sadness, as should be strongly evident once the list itself begins.

Re: Thomas Ligotti's Top Eleven Sad Songs

A song that never fails to sadden me is "I Talk to the Wind" by King Crimson.

"What does it mean to be alive except to court disaster and suffering at every moment?"

Tibet: Carnivals?
Ligotti: Ceremonies for initiating children into the cult of the sinister.
Tibet: Gas stations?
Ligotti: Nothing to say about gas stations as such, although I've always responded to the smell of gasoline as if it were a kind of perfume.

Re: Thomas Ligotti's Top Eleven Sad Songs

Low's version of "I started A Joke" is infintely more melancholy than the Bee-Gees. It can be found on the "A Lifetime of Temporary Relief" compilation.
My Top 5
1."Goodbye" by Mark Eitzel
"A dowsing rod trembles over the underground stream
frozen water pouring through the dark
empties through the well that was my dream
loss of faith loss of heart"
2."Sea" by Codeine (or "Loss Leader")
"Put your hand in my good hand
Promise not to leave this dry and barren land"
3."The Biggest Lie" by Elliott Smith
4."Cold White Christmas" by Casiotone For the Painfully Alone
5."The Leaves Grow Old and Fall and Die" by Hood

Re: Thomas Ligotti's Top Eleven Sad Songs

I hadn't planned to post again to this thread. Or, to put it another way, I had planned not to post again to this thread. But remembering sad songs is a compulsive pastime, so here are some more:

Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, "Helpless"
Bob Dylan, "Percy's Song," "One Too Many Mornings," "Shelter from the Storm"
Led Zeppelin, "Tangerine," "That's the Way"
Guns 'N' Roses, "Estranged"
Van Morrison, "Madame George," "Slim Slow Slider"
Rolling Stones, "Angie"
Bruce Springsteen, "The River," "Atlantic City"
Syd Barrett, "Baby Lemonade," "Wined and Dined"
Rod Stewart, "Mandolin Wind"
Emmylou Harris, "Sweet Old World" (cover of Lucinda Williams song)
Steely Dan, "Midnight Cruiser," "Deacon Blues"
John Mellencamp, "Jackie Brown"
Sonic Youth, "Tunic (Song for Karen)"
The Verve, "Bittersweet Symphony," "The Drugs Don't Work"
Eagles, "Desperado"
Emerson, Lake, and Palmer, "Lucky Man"
Elton John, "Empty Garden"

Re: Thomas Ligotti's Top Eleven Sad Songs

I'd tend to agree with the mention of Lou Reed's "Sad Song", although I think the entire second side of Berlin pretty much qualifies as one single, unbelievably sad song.

"And into his dreams he fell...and forever."
