Re: Thomas Ligotti's Top Eleven Sad Songs

Hmm. . . well in no particular order-

Midnight Black Earth by Bohren & der Club of Gore
Gloomy Sunday (Live) by Diamanda Galas
Suspiria de Profundis by Die Form
Fred's World by Angelo Badalamenti (Lost Highway Soundtrack)
Lento and Lullaby Elegy by Elliot Goldenthal (Alien 3 Soundtrack)
Montecute by Coil (The Angelic Conversation)
Oppenheimer by Jocelyn Pook
Receive by Neurosis & Jarboe

I am not sure what to put next -

Re: Thomas Ligotti's Top Eleven Sad Songs

excellent choice, there are also some of my own favorites...

what about 'Tainted Love' by Coil

(Dictated while taking a stroll) I have come to realizewhat a superbly contrived marionette man is. Though without strings attached, one can strut, jump, hop and, moreover, utter words, an elaborately made puppet! Who knows? At the Bon season next year, I may be a new dead invited to the Bon festival. What an evanescent world! This truth keeps slipping off our minds.

Re: Thomas Ligotti's Top Eleven Sad Songs

How on earth could I forget about 'Tainted Love'. That brings something else up, tears have all but ceaced to spring out of me, for better or worse, yet I still know the feeling one gets, effervescing through their being, that usually generates them. I must say that many of Coil's songs that aren't even particularly sad have this effect.

Are you Shivering? is probably the first song of theirs that comes to mind regarding this. Intense beauty being more than enough to trigger a violent reaction that bears more semblance to one of grief or rage than anything else. Not very many other bands I can think of can really do that.

Re: Thomas Ligotti's Top Eleven Sad Songs

My own attempt at a list of the eleven saddest songs, in recommended listening order:
  1. Mickey Newbury: The Future's Not What It Used To Be
  2. Donovan: Young Girl Blues
  3. Kaleidoscope: Please Excuse My Face
  4. Richard Twice: God Give Me Strength
  5. Bill Fay: Laughing Man
  6. Sibylle Baier: The End
  7. Elizabeth Anka Vajagic: Sleep with Dried Up Tears
  8. Scott Walker: Two Weeks Since You've Gone
  9. Françoise Hardy: Let My Name Be Sorrow
  10. Syd Barrett: Golden Hair
  11. Arthur: Valentine Gray

I would be more intersted in Ligotti's top 'happy' songs.

A brilliant suggestion! I would imagine that "Put on a Happy Face" and "Candyman" and "Everything Is Beautiful" are all near the top of his list.

"What does it mean to be alive except to court disaster and suffering at every moment?"

Tibet: Carnivals?
Ligotti: Ceremonies for initiating children into the cult of the sinister.
Tibet: Gas stations?
Ligotti: Nothing to say about gas stations as such, although I've always responded to the smell of gasoline as if it were a kind of perfume.

Re: Thomas Ligotti's Top Eleven Sad Songs

Thank you so much, Matthew. That song breaks my heart every time I hear it!

This one is powerful, too, with similarly mysterious lyrics. "I needed so much / To have nothing to touch / I've always been greedy that way" . . .

Ms. Del Rio's version of Crying has been one of the most haunting songs I've ever heard - sadly I came across it only by coincidence (hunting for Roy Orbison covers) and haven't yet been able to see the movie and thus enjoy the song in it's soundtrack environment ...
Talking about the Big O, the saddest song I can think of by Mr. Orbison is "Love in time".
