Same here!

I have only read three novels by Dunsany. The third was The Blessing of Pan, which I enjoyed too, but not as much as those first two, which were both truly magical.

Re: Fantasy Author Recommendations

I long thought of The King of Elfland's Daughter and Bradbury's Something Wicked This Way Comes as my very favorite novels.

Later, I'll agree with James, I was most impressed with Hodgson's The Night Land. That, and also with A. Merritt's The Metal Monster for its intensely weird vision. Both of which are science fantasy works.

I must of course also mention Machen's The Hill of Dreams, Blackwood's The Centaur, and especially my re-reading of Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness. On my first reading of Mountains ... when younger, it largely passed me by, simply because I could not grasp its outre subtlety of vision. ... But my re-reading was that of a perfectly beautiful, leisurely ponderous, measured masterpiece. (I shall NEVER view a Hollywood production of that novel, which would surely taint my memories.)

Re: Fantasy Author Recommendations

Stumbled across a cheap copy of The Green Pearl, Jack Vance's sequel to Lyonesse. Anyone know if I need to read Lyonesse first or can I just go straight into book 2?

Re: Fantasy Author Recommendations

Yes, it follows and builds directly on the story of Lyonesse. A great book, but won't make as much sense without reading the first in the series.
