Re: Is Ridley Scott’s ‘Prometheus’ A Lovecraftian ’2001′?
Saw it today. whether it is a Lovecraftian 2001, I don't know. I fell asleep several times during 2001 on account of nothing interesting going on. had nearly the same reaction to Prometheus, so the "like 2001" part is accurate. Lovecraftian? not so much. There's a few minutes of generic Ancient Aliens speculation in there, but then that is ignored in favor of overhyped underwhelming mediocre monster movie.
spoilers follow. all that cool promotional stuff they released online, like the David commercial, the Weyland TED talk, etc? not a glimmer of a hint of a fraction of a second of any of it in the actual movie. so just watch that stuff, and then about 3 hours of made-for-cable monster movies (anything with tentacles will do), and you've got it. If Noomi Rapace running around in her underwear is a draw for you, occasionally pause the monster movie to watch scenes of that from some other movie.

Re: Is Ridley Scott’s ‘Prometheus’ A Lovecraftian ’2001′?
Thanks for posting this link. I saw the movie yesterday and I liked it. It wasn't perfect, but compared to most of the junk churned out today I'm not going to hammer it. I don't agree with everything in the article but it opened my eyes to some references I missed. As one person commented, this movie is generating a great deal of discussion. Not all movies can make that claim.

I liked the film, but it had one two many instances of otherwise intelligent people doing incomprehensibly stupid things just to move the plot along.

I liked it, but wanted to love it. I merely liked it, so I was disappointed. I'm still glad I watched it though.

Re: Is Ridley Scott’s ‘Prometheus’ A Lovecraftian ’2001′?
I still have to see this movie, but based around what I've read this far, I guess the hype killed it.
Not surprising... Teaser trailers for a trailer? A new trailer every couple of days; an aggressive viral campaign? I'm glad I've stayed away from most of the hype, but I am not expecting the next 2001, just a space horror movie. I think Ridley Scott won't be able to pull another Blade Runner...

Re: Is Ridley Scott’s ‘Prometheus’ A Lovecraftian ’2001′?
i really liked it. thought it was lovecraftian in the sense that the characters were mere marionettes intended to move the story along. and the lack of characterisation: surely that was the point (in fact, the only character to be 'fleshed out', as it were, was the android). the humans were meant to be mere ants when considered in terms of our makers; and in terms of the movie itself, it was about ideas more than characters. i dont think this was a mistake on RS's part. i actually dont think hes done anything decent since alien and blade runner (hated gladiator with a passion, almost as bad as braveheart), so was delighted with this. expect, though, a longer directors' cut – this could easily be a lot longer. also loved the conversation between the android and his human 'creator', in which they conclude that his creators made him just because they could (hes also not treated very respectfully throughout, as if the humans have some kind of innate aversion to him, so why not our creators to us?). also love the unanswered nature of the film – it doesnt try to tie every loose thread up. we live in ignorance, which is reflected by the characters' limited understanding. did the creators make the aliens as a biological weapon (after all, this isnt their homeworld, just a military research base)? and to use against who? answers always lead to questions. anyway, better than alvin and the chipmonks: chipwrecked (which i had to take my five-year-old to see).

Seeing it Sunday and am PUMPED for this movie. Mixed reviews, oddly enough, make me more excited for a movie.

Re: Is Ridley Scott’s ‘Prometheus’ A Lovecraftian ’2001′?
I went to see this on Friday, and I'm not sure why I was compelled to, since I normally don't care for sci-fi films, but compelled I was. I had no expectations whatsoever, since I had avoided reading/watching anything about the film beforehand, and so was not overly disappointed with what I saw. Aesthetically, I found it quite pleasing. Michael Fassbenber was BRILLIANT as David, definitely the highlight of the movie for me. But the rest of the characters were rather a letdown. I couldn't believe how miscast Logan Marshall-Green was. I found myself filled with a low burning rage every time he came on screen after the first few instances of encountering. Scientist? How laughable!
Sure, the film did raise some interesting points, but I don't think they were explored deeply enough. And not really liking any of the characters took away any empathy I might have felt for their situation. Half the time I kept thinking idiot! idiot! idiot! to myself as I watched their shenanigans on screen. I suppose I would have to say that it was enjoyable overall, and I appreciated its nihilism for the most part, but the ending kind of took something away from that. I won't say why, because I hate giving spoilers. But in the long run, this is hardly an enduring classic for me. Maybe I'll see it again at some point, but it's doubtful.

Re: Is Ridley Scott’s ‘Prometheus’ A Lovecraftian ’2001′?
Hope these images aren't spoilers. These comparisons with H. R. Giger design's for Jodorowsky's Dune have me looking forward to Prometheus somewhat more than I was. If there is enough Giger or at least Giger-inspired design, that could possibly allow me to overlook some flaws in other aspects of the movie. I was somewhat disappointed with the minimal Giger design in Aliens.
