Re: Favorite Horror Movies
Thanks for mentioning Apocalypse Now, Dr. Strangelove, and Aguirre. I also added a few things about them here:
The Apocalypse of Pooh - THE NIGHTMARE NETWORK Rudiments of Myth & Melancholy - THE NIGHTMARE NETWORK And thanks to all for mentioning the other titles! I've not seen some of them, like Hour of the Wolf. I still can't bear to watch The Devils (I saw that when I was around ten, I think, together with The Brood) but I'd like to read Huxley's book. I saw The Descent recently and it was quite good, although for some reason I can now barely stand gore on screen (it must have been caused by all of those childhood years spent watching '70s slasher pics). Lately, I've been looking forward to horror that focuses on atmosphere, psychological fear, etc. For example, I bought the German Horror Classics box set (which has Caligari, The Golem, Nosferatu, and House of Wax) and enjoyed watching the collection. How about Fearless Vampire Killers and strange films like Devil-Doll, Night of the Hunter, and Freaks? Or maybe Kwaidan, Spirits of the Dead, Eyes without a Face, or Itim (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0256106/)? Finally, I find this film very intriguing but can't find a copy: http://brightlightsfilm.blogspot.com...eura-1952.html http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0045283/ |

Re: Favorite Horror Movies
I am extremely fond of Tim Burton's short 1984 film Frankenweenie and David Lynch's Eraserhead. Mr. Burton is apparently contemplating a reworking (and expansion?) of Frankenweenie, currently scheduled for a December 2009 release. Three wags of the tail to oddball cinema!

Re: Favorite Horror Movies
No has mentioned Repulsion yet. Just watched it last night for the first time. Great film. Doesn't seem dated at all (other than being B&W) despite being made 43 years ago.
Some other good ones without any love so far: Pulse (Japanese, not American) May Session 9 The Beyond (in spite of several really cheesy scenes) Opera The Eye (original Hong Kong, not sequels/remakes) edit: I can't do math, but I fixed it.

Re: Favorite Horror Movies
Paeng; Hour of the Wolf ought to be up your alley then. Atmosphere, mystery, and strange nuances are at its heart. The movie requires patience; tension builds very slowly behind a normal facade, and then when it is not at all suspected, what one thought was reality and fantasy suddenly exchange places. I shouldn't even have to say this though, since everyone who comes to this site is probably far more patient than average.
I've not seen Eyes Without a Face for a long time. The director, Georges Franju, did a surrealistic remake (in the 60's mind you) of Judex, a 20's silent French serial whose main character has widely been thought to have influenced many modern pulp figure archetypes and whatnot, like heavy and obscuring outfits with exaggerated capes and sashes, elaborate disguises, hidden lairs, and very strange talents that an individual who'd lead a halfway normal life would find relatively useless. You can supposedly get it here, if anyone was interested, though I haven't tried yet, I just found it . . . http://www.moviesunlimited.com/musit....asp?id=r2&n=1

Re: Favorite Horror Movies
I also like both Nosferatu movies. The Herzog version has one of the creepiest opening sequences that I can remember. A bit of trivia: Roland Topor plays Renfield.
I always hoped that Herzog and Kinski would team up and remake The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. Herzog has a brilliant visual sense, and Kinski is the only one that I could envision who had a chance to challenge Conrad Veidt as Cesare. I also like the movie Buddy Boy. This is like a combination of Rear Window and Polanski's The Tenant. Well worth a watch.

Klaus Kinski is one of my favorite mad men. I could picture him playing Klaus Klingman. If only he were still alive.

Re: Favorite Horror Movies
To the many formidable films listed in this thread I'd like to add Kaneto Shindo's 1964 masterpiece, Onibaba. For the lead character, played by the brilliant actress Nobuko Otowa, the wearing of a mask is but a prelude to a plummet into the abyss. Powerful beyond description, Onibaba is allegory as pure horror.

Re: Favorite Horror Movies
Two films involving "home invasion" are among my favorite horror films. It goes without saying that these are unconventional choices. 1981's Neighbors with John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd is ostensibly a comedy. Any intended comedy, however, comes off as chilling creepiness. The creepiness is the only thing which saves this stinker. Recommended. Trust me. A much better film is Pacific Heights (1990) with Melanie Griffith, Matthew Modine, and Michael Keaton. This is a nailbiter about a tenant terrorizing an innocent landlord couple within their own house. Very disturbing. Recommended. I'm just about ready to become a hermit with no option to sublet...

Re: Favorite Horror Movies
Glad to see a wide range and many of my favorites, Repulsion especially. It's difficult to make stagnation interesting, but Polanski did a fine job.
A few of my favorites for various reasons (The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari goes without saying, but the recent remake is nice as well): VIDEODROME UZUMAKI DOLLS HALLOWEEN III (the best one) DEEP RED HATCHET MURDERS CURSE OF THE DOLL PEOPLE I, MADMAN TUNING THE SLEEPING MACHINE HORROR EXPRESS HORROR HOTEL GARGOYLES POLTERGEIST II and on and on and on....
