I was immediately drawn into the haunted protagonist's story, and with him shared his fears and obsession. The grim conclusion was a satisfying surprise for me as well. Reading this made my day!

On a somewhat related note, I discovered a great short story with the same title written by Hanns Ewers , an author unkown to me until today.
