Slovenian film 9:06 appears to have a Roland Topor/Roman Polanski The Tenant element to it.

Re: Movie Trailers

Trailer for Spike Jonze's short film sponsored by Absolut Vodka. Guess this promotion is similar to what BMW did w/ the Driver series featuring Clive Owen and various directors.

Budget $75 million (€ 50 million)

Agora is a 2009 Spanish historical drama film directed by Alejandro Amenábar, written by Amenábar and Mateo Gil, and starring Rachel Weisz and Max Minghella. It tells the story of Hypatia, a female philosopher in Roman Egypt, who is portrayed by Weisz. With dramatic license, the biopic includes a romantic angle: her slave falls in love with her. The film was co-financed by Spanish company Sogecable. It was screened Out of Competition at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival in May, was released in Spain on 9 October, and is being released country by country throughout late 2009 and early 2010.

Plot

Centers around the astronomer-philosopher Hypatia of Alexandria (Weisz) and several men whom she knows such as her slave Davus (Minghella), who is torn between his love for his mistress and the possibility of gaining his freedom by joining the rising tide of Christianity.

Controversy over anti-Christian bias

The Religious Anti-Defamation Observatory protested against the film for "promoting hatred of Christians and reinforcing false clichés about the Catholic Church." The film has yet to find distributors in Italy.

Prove Per Una Tragedia Siciliana [Rehearsal For A Sicilian Tragedy], written and directed by John Turturro and Roman Paska (2009)

Synopsis by Mark Deming, All Movie Guide:

Actor and filmmaker John Turturro pays a visit to the home of his forefathers in this documentary from noted theater director Roman Paska. Turturro’s roots go back to Sicily—his grandparents on his mother’s side were born in Aragona and Palermo—and for years he’s been blocking out plans for a film to be shot on the island. With this in mind, Turturro and Paska traveled to Sicily, both to see the sights and to learn more about the unique culture, especially their rich tradition in puppet theater. In Prove Per Una Tragedia Siciliana (aka Rehearsal For A Sicilian Tragedy), Turturro explores the homes of his ancestors, studies the architecture of the island, meets and interviews celebrated puppet artist Mimmo Cuticchio, and speaks with the locals about the lingering Sicilian preoccupation with mortality. Rehearsal For A Sicilian Tragedy was an official selection at the 2009 Venice International Film Festival.

Re: Movie Trailers

Boy A was a fantastic little film. The lead actor, Andrew Garfield, is also great in his role of the Red Riding Trilogy during the 1974 segment.

the Red Riding Trilogy has great performances. It was interesting to see how David Peace's quartet of books would work as films. For the most part I believe it to be a successful translation. Works in a similar realm as James Ellroy's LA Confidential with regard to police corruption and shady business.

Well I also think this film was a brilliant piece of cinema. I watched it yesterday without ever having heard about it before. It was quite a surprise.

Thanks for Red Riding Trilogy recommendation, rresmini. Now it's next on "films to watch" list.
