Simon Strantzas

Has anyone read anything by Simon Strantzas? He's a Canadian author, and his major influences are Thomas Ligotti, Ramsey Campbell, and Robert Aickman. Can't go wrong there! He has a story called "The Autumnal City" in "Wicked Hollow" issue #9. He also has a novella called "Fading Light" in a new anthology called "Bernie Herrmann's Manic Sextet". I have both on order. I haven't read anything by him yet, but I'm very curious to see if anyone else has had any experience with his work. He's probably someone on TLO that we already know by another name. Are you on here Simon? Here is Simon Strantzas' website:

Re: Simon Strantzas

Oh yes, I'm here ;-)

Geez, I hope you like the stories. The WH piece is probably more Ligottian than the rest, considering I wrote it after listening to either "This Degenerate..." or "The Unholy City" over and over.

My email address is on my site. Please feel free to let me know what you thought of them.

And, if I might ask, what has prompted you to investigate my work? I don't know you already, do I? Sorry, but having a topic about me is still w-e-i-r-d...

Re: Simon Strantzas

Ha! I knew it! Nice to meet you Sim.. er, Nomis! It never ceases to amaze me how many creative people we have on this site; authors, artists, musicians, etc. I'm always on the lookout for authors in that "horror/existentialist" vein (as I'm sure most of us are). I ran across your site and noticed your list of influences. Then I read some glowing reviews of your story "The Autumnal City" online. I'll shoot you an email after I read them. I'm looking forward to your story in "Bare Bone" #8 too. Is that out yet?

Re: Simon Strantzas

I'm not exactly sure where BB 8 is right now. I saw the proofs in October, and thought for sure I'd have a copy of it by Christmas.

Actually, my Bare Bone contribution was spawned, at least partially, by "Our Temporary Supervisor", so there's another Ligotti connection for you.

I fear my short story (not novella) in "Bernie Herrmann's Manic Sextext", and the story I have in the last "All Hallows" have little of the overtly Ligottian in them. Still, we all need to change up our diet once in a while.

Yes, it's perhaps the most transparent psuedonym on the internet. That's why i like it!

Incidentally, I've just heard from Kevin over at Bare Bone. It seems he finally has stock of BARE BONE 8 and will be shipping them out quite soon.

Not long to wait now!

Re: Simon Strantzas

FYI, for anyone interested, I've just updated the website with quite un-ligottian look.

There's not much new, content-wise, but at least my YBH&F "Honourable Mentions" are now listed.

Re: Simon Strantzas

And, of course, a final note to those interested to say that my first collection, BENEATH THE SURFACE, is now available for pre-order from Humdrumming Ltd. This book is subtitled (for the moment, at least) "A Book of Nightmares", as I feel these stories of mine spend more time in that liminal space between worlds. They are, in many ways, my nightmares in words, often sharing that same nightmarish logic. The influences in this collection may be a little more "on the surface" than in my other tales, but at least one, if not more, are inspired by my enjoyment of Mr Ligotti's work. Which isn't to say these are pastiches by any means — I'd like to think they are all uniquely in my own voice — but somewhere in the back of my head the nightmares of stories such as "The Shadow at the Bottom of the World" infected me.

I'm also proud to announce that the esteemed Mark Samuels will be penning the introduction/foreword to my collection, something about which I could not be happier.

So, please, do yourself (but more importantly me) a favour and plunk down some of your holiday money on it. And, if you decide to go to the BFS FantasyCon in 2008, you might be able to get a signature from its author . . . maybe.
