Topic Nominated Is Ridley Scott’s ‘Prometheus’ A Lovecraftian ’2001′?

This is a terrific, characteristically insightful and eloquent article by our own Matt Cardin.

I don't think it's possible for this film to live up to my hopes/expectations at this point.

Ack, I'm one of those "avoiding all info" people for this movie. I watched one trailer, then decided to try and see it with as little foreknowledge as possible. Mr. Cardin, I will read your undoubtedly excellent article after I see the movie!

Re: Is Ridley Scott’s ‘Prometheus’ A Lovecraftian ’2001′?

Gotta agree with Sam. I too am going to wait to read Cardin's review until after I've seen the movie. I know there's supposed to be a connection between Prometheus and Alien. I consider Alien to be one of the great Lovecraftian movies of all times. From the trailer, Prometheus hints at one of my favorite Lovecraftian themes, that of forbidden knowledge. There's a part on the trailer where the scientists are naively optimistic saying something to the effect of "why would something contact us unless it was benevolent." They're thinking Avatar not Alien. I thought that was brilliant. REALLY looking forward to this movie.

Uh, yeah, count me in as well. I'll read the essay once I've seen the movie.

Who am I kidding,? I'll probably read it in a couple of days!

Actually, I'm watching every trailer, reading every article I can find about this film. Thanks for the great article. From what I've gathered, Lovecraft's influence is all over this film. I simply can't wait to see it. Anyone know the release date? CHG

Any positive reviews of Prometheus? The Danish film critics are, it seems, not impressed. What the heck, I'll probably see it anyway : )

What an excellent way to wake up in the morning. There's nothing like the sound of impending doom to get one out of bed in a hurry..

Re: Is Ridley Scott’s ‘Prometheus’ A Lovecraftian ’2001′?

I watched Prometheus last weekend, great film! and the Lovecraft connection / forbidden knowledge theme is definitely there if you ask me. I was reminded of this passage from At the Mountains of Madness: "It is absolutely necessary, for the peace and safety of mankind, that some of earth's dark, dead corners and unplumbed depths be let alone; lest sleeping abnormalities wake to resurgent life, and blasphemously surviving nightmares squirm and splash out of their black lairs to newer and wider conquests." It would be interesting to hear what others think of the film, I myself didn't have very high expectations, which is probably why I was positively surprised : )
