Re: Whomever is your favourite artist?

I don't know why but I immensely like some Pre-Raphaelite paintings, in theory they should not be particularly interesting to me, but somehow they are, every now-and-then I end up buying some book about them or even Pre-Raphaelite poetry...

Also, I like everything about expressionism in every type of art ( definitely not abstract ), especially artist from Germany and Austria. Otto Dix, Egon Schiele, Goya, Francis Bacon, Munch and Caspar would probably be in my top 10 or whatever.

Re: Whomever is your favourite artist?

There are loads and the list has been expanding because there is like an avalanche of amazing artists today. Andrzej Masianis, Ernst Fuchs, Nicholas Kalmakoff, Alison Schulnik, Steve Ditko, Graham Ingels, Robert Venosa, John Martin, Henry Fuseli, William Blake, El Greco, Lee Brown Coye, Goya, Remedios Varo and so many others.
But Albin Brunovsky has more staying power for me than anyone else. I discovered him on Aeron Alfrey's Monster Brains and I bought a large book devoted to his etchings that I still haven't finished looking through. I scanned several images onto a blog when less of his art was around the internet and I'd like to think that people have been spreading my scans because his art has been circulated considerably since then but he still should be more famous.
Unfortunately and bafflingly, there is next to none of his paintings online and I want to buy the big painting book someday.

I'm pleased to see he has his own thread here..

Re: Whomever is your favourite artist?

I am very fond of this painting, The Spell, by William Fettes Douglas, who seems to have been an individual interested in the magic arts. The painting is held in my local gallery, so I can visit it whenever I wish. It evokes the true essence of bygone necromancy and sorcery, as though Douglas had indeed seen the wizardry-haunted past.

I believe in the power of the imagination to remake the world, to release the truth within us, to hold back the night, to transcend death, to charm motorways, to ingratiate ourselves with birds, to enlist the confidences of madmen.
-- J.G. Ballard

Your fall should be like the fall of mountains. But I was before mountains. I was in the beginning, and shall be forever. The first and the last. The world come full circle. I am not the wheel. I am the hand that turns the wheel. I am Time, the Destroyer. I was the wind and the stars before this. Before planets. Before heaven and hell. And when all is done, I will be wind again, to blow this world as dust back into endless space. To me the coming and going of Man is as nothing.

Re: Whomever is your favourite artist?

Alex Grey conveys the psychedelic experience very well. He has done a lot of visual art work with the band Tool.
