A week ago--seriously, a week ago-- a scientific report came out saying virtually all cancer is due to risky behavior, not genetic programing.
Then today we get this:
Scientists say cancer susceptibility is genetic | New York Post

Re: Unusual News of the Day

Making strides towards AI.

Scientists predict human thought in real time, nearly every time

Neuroscientists from the University of Washington have decoded brain signals in real-time and with astounding accuracy, as revealed in a recent study published in PLOS Computational Biology. Researchers attached electrodes to the temporal lobes of seven epilepsy patients for roughly one week -- the implants were part of a program that aimed to locate the sources of these patients' seizures, but while the electrodes were active, the patients also participated in this brain-wave study. Researchers were in the neighborhood, after all.
The participants viewed a series of houses and faces that appeared on a screen for 400 milliseconds at a time, and were told to look for the upside-down building. An algorithm tracked the brain waves of their temporal lobes, which deals in sensory input. By the end of each session, the program was able to pinpoint with roughly 96 percent accuracy which images the patients were looking at, in real time. The program knew whether the patient was seeing a house, a face or a gray screen within 20 milliseconds of actual perception.
"Clinically, you could think of our result as a proof of concept toward building a communication mechanism for patients who are paralyzed or have had a stroke and are completely locked-in."

Re: Unusual News of the Day

This is kind of grisly, but the reporter said it was like 'something out of a horror story' and the fact that it is taking place in Ligotti's old stomping grounds of Grosse Pointe, Michigan, I thought I would post it. Reminiscent of RLS's "The Body Snatchers."

Body-part dealer rented infected cadavers to students

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/crime/body-part-dealer-rented-infected-cadavers-students-article-1.2514657

A Detroit-area couple who ran a black-market body part business butchered donated cadavers with a chainsaw and sold the hacked, diseased pieces to unsuspecting medical students for a hefty profit, officials said.

Re: Unusual News of the Day

Well, it could have been worse, Ben. They could have sold that meat to some burger chain.
Damn, for some reason I feel like a burger. Genuine beef though.

Think of all the anonymous diners and low end dives a man ends up eating at over the long years. What are the chances somewhere along the line you've eaten human flesh? I had a bologna sandwich in New York City in the fall of '75 that I still regret. So does my friend Bill Harris. He had one in that dive too, and he's not been right since.

"We should have known," moaned my dear friend, kneeling on the curbstone, upchucking into the gutter. "We never should have ordered seconds--"

"Not our fault," I gasped in between upheavels. "We were innocent victims...nothing more."

"It was too delicious,"said Harris. "We should have known--"

"Can it," I said and got unsteadily to my feet. I began to wobble back toward the shadowy dive.

"Where are you going?" yelled Bill.

"Back inside," I said. "I want to see if they do take-outs."

Now, seriously. In the 70's I met a N.Y.C. black cabdriver and part-time actor--a literate and fascinating gentleman who was an extra in "Marathon Man"--who told me that he had eaten human flesh. It tasted like pork. (Geeze, I could have guessed that. I wonder if that's why some religions regard pork as unclean. God must have hated the poor pig to make it so delicious; it's rather unseemly for a man to lust after the flesh of a pig.) I had the good sense to not ask any questions about his indoctrination into the cult of man eaters. I'm sure it was quite innocent; something like, "Oh, shucks, I cut off my thumb by accident, why don't we all gather around and I'll cook it up and we can see what human flesh tastes like."

Justin, are you listening?

lol. If you remember a sandwich from the fall of '75, it must have been bad.

I can't recall if it was Tom or Emil who said that a certain tribe referred to human beings as 'long pigs.' Wouldn't want to hang out with them for long.

I never got a chance to read Justin's book. The title certainly is intriguing.

Re: Unusual News of the Day

One of the stories does directly concern cannibalism (because people probably would have felt ripped off otherwise), but I never saw the title as implying strictly that. In the context of the whole book, it means as much something like “what does kissing taste like” - i.e. - it’s supposed to be as much about (often futilely) reaching towards life as it is about consuming death.

Re: Unusual News of the Day

Justin's book is excellent. Read it. The title isn't indicative of the book's content, although it is appropriate and somewhat explained/justified within one of the stories.
