Rich Hall’s Presidential Grudge Match

Rich Hall’s Presidential Grudge Match - 2016 - 7/10

Sick of politics already? Well, too bad.
Rich Hall is an American ex-pat living in Britain.
He hosts comedy specials, trying to explain the nuances of American life.
Such as, in this one, the glorious history of US presidential campaigns
This is a.topic ripe for skewering, slashing and bludgeoning.
Mercilessly funny, unless your are still gloating or raging.

I doubt it. I only watch them in phases and I've never had a real passion for films the way I do with still images and music. I've narrowed my focus on films a bit.
I often think much of the films and comedy I watch is just me procrastinating but I still have a lot of European fairy tale and animation, martial arts and Asian horror I genuinely want to see.

I like those Rich Hall documentaries, I've seen most of them.

White: Melody Of Curse

White: Melody Of The Curse - 2011 - 5/10
AKA - Hwa-i-teu: Jeo-woo-eui Mel-lo-di // 화 이 트: 저 주 의 멜 로 디

Oft told story of one artist appropriating another’s creativity
This set in the K-Pop competitive sphere.
Pink Dolls have never broken big and face their last chance at success.
Backdancer Eun-joo finds a VHS labeled “White” of an unknown group, auditioning a catchy song.
Pink Dolls claim the song, update the arrangement and choreography, fight over who sings lead.
And then, one by one, disasters strike group members.
The music is hook laden, the girls are cute, but this is predictable Horror.
May work better for Asian pop buffs, or frighten ten year olds.

I Smile Back

I Smile Back - 2015 - 7/10

Well acted across the board, but depressing, disturbing film of mental illness.
Mom (outstanding Sarah Silverman) drinks, pops pills, snorts lines, prowls for men who like doggie.
Stunts and reckless behavior to break the numbness.
Not shown, but probably when she’s on lithium.
When she skips the lith, she swings from belligerent to utterly withdrawn.
Childhood demons might be a cause, or it might be genetic.
Family and friends are trapped with her, or swirling near the edge of her whirlpool.
The soul in a tunnel with no light at either end.

The Secret Life Of Books: S02

The Secret Life Of Books: S02 - 2016 - 6/10

Superior followup to the first series (S01 marred by inferior presenters).
This season is a trifle more “English” with several titles less known outside of Britain.
Episodes include Spenser’s “Faerie Queen,” Lear’s “Nonsense Songs,” Eliot’s “Mill On The Floss.”
Also “Confessions Of An Opium Eater,” “Cider With Rosie,” and “Swallows And Amazons.”
Each show is a mere 30 minutes. Hosts read from the book, talk of their relationship with it, and the legacy of book and author.
Book lovers need no recommendation. Others, this is a literary way to kill a half hour.

Bron / Broen / Bridge

Bron Broen: S01 - 2011 - 7/10
AKA: The Bridge

Corpse is found on Øresund Bridge, midway between Denmark and Sweden.
Police from both countries arrive and they will decide jurisdiction when the identity is discovered.
Wait a minute -- The body is actually cut in half -- No, it’s two separate bodies put together.
The murders are the beginning of a series of well planned events and symbolic deaths.
Brief series starts slow, but accelerates to red-line quickly.
Not to be missed is the female Swedish detective, Saga.
She has virtually no social skills, and no check switch - and is painfully funny - but her counterparts recognize her crack investigative skills.

What we Do In The Shadows

What We Do In The Shadows - 2014 - 7/10

Four older guys share a flat in Wellington.
They bicker about chores (dirty dishes a particular problem), have meetings, find activities.
For them, the day begins around 6:00 PM. Oh yeah, they are vampires.

Hilarious documentary follows the gents as they go clubbing, heckle werewolves, invite humans to dinner.
All are chatty - well - Petyr, 8000 years old, is more reserved.
Inventive, droll, good-natured.
Reminded me of This Is Spinal Tap.
Though like Tap, tails a bit in the final twenty minutes.

The werewolves were my favorite part of the film (which was very strong overall).

I thought this was okay. I like the scenes on the dance floor with the schizo light and music.

"So in the end it remains advisable to accept whatever comes, to behave like an inert mass even if one feels oneself being swept away, not to be lured into a single unneccesary step, to regard others with the gaze of an animal, to feel no remorse, in short to crush with one's own hand any ghost of life that subsists, that is, to intensify the final quiet of the grave still further and let nothing beyond that endure." ---Franz Kafka, Resolutions

Forbidden Room

The Forbidden Room - 2015 - 7/10

Wow, I have seen some truly bizarre films in my time, this one hits my top 2% in out-there!
Collision of arthouse, experimental, Silent cinema, demonstration shorts ...
A submarine crew is trapped undersea with a cargo of explosive jelly.
Because they are running out of air, they gobble down hotcakes since those are filled with air pockets.
A sopping wet woodsman (Sapling Jack) enters their midst via a door / duct.
He shares his story of fighting the Red Wolves who had captured the lovely Margot.
Margot in turn, remembers when she had over a hundred broken bones set by the doctor who fell in love with her, only he was kidnapped in the sensuous embrace of skeleton women.

That’s maybe the first twenty minutes of an almost two hour visual kaleidoscope.
Visual dissolves, inter-titles, musique concrète, a powerhouse cast, in a film confusing, funny, and thoughtful.
Oh, one of the woman’s boyfriends turns into a banana. How could I forget that?
Unwary - beware.
